Blogher on TODAS, Latina perspective at conference

I took a cursory look on Technorati to see if I could find anyone writing in Spanish about Blogher. I found something I didn't know - a former senator from Chile, Fernando Flores, translated the discussion guidelines from last year's conference.

TODAS on Blogher:

Faltan pocas horas para que comience la BlogHer Conference ‘06 . La conferencia se desarrollará el 28 y 29 de Julio en San Jose, CA. El tema central de esta edición es “¿Como estan cambiando tu mundo los blogs? ( How are your blogs changing your world? ) .

It's nice to see that word has spread outside of the English language.

Anyway, TODAS is an amazing site. They report on news for and about women, but don't editorialize much. Take a look at their post on La Mujer Gigante - an enormous educational project to show the inside of a woman's body when she's 9 months pregnant. It's a public health initiative meant to persuade women to quit smoking and eat healthily while they're pregnant. It looks neat though also a bit creepy - and doesn't she seem a little bit skinny for being so pregnant - and who would lie belly-down at that point? Ha! At least you walk out through the FEET... whew!

Marisa Treviño of Latina Lista, a journalist and writer on family and sociopolitical issues, described how she wrote to Elisa Camahort about the Latina perspective being overlooked. Elisa wrote back describing the "do-ocracy" philosophy and asked if L.L. would like to be on a panel. So I'll get to hear her talk on the Identity and Obligation panel - very cool. And that's how it works... if you speak up and are willing to step up, then most of the time with Blogher, something happens! Yay!

I'm hoping that next year I can lead efforts to bring blogging women from Mexico, Central & South America to BlogHer. To make this happen I would probably need to raise money for airfare. Of course now that I open my big mouth I will have to "step up" and do it.

Contributing Editor Liz Henry also blogs at othermag and Badgermama.

Thanks for blogging on this Liz!

As a Latina myself, I was thrilled to see that there was a Latina on the Identity and Obligation panel & that there even was such a panel.

I'm currently in the process of working with several Latina & Latino bloggers to launch a blog in Spanish, English & Spanglish, modelled in many ways after BlogHer.

=-)

The decision to take action came from the realization at the DailyKos conference that there simply aren't many of us around (Latina/o bloggers blogging from a Latina/o perspective)

Props again for bringing this to the forefront!
