Can you tell me how to get...how to get to Sesame Street?

Did you know that the 37th season of Sesame Street kicks off Monday, August 14? As in the Monday that you are probably reading this?! I didn't either! But the Lovely Mrs. Davis knew and she is celebrating it! To mark this occasion, she is asking for your help. Yes, you. I personally grew up watching Sesame Street (I remember when only Big Bird could see Mr. Snuffie and I remember Mr. Hooper. Oh, how I could go on!) Which is exactly what she is calling you to do.

If you're a mom or dad blogger, I want YOU to be in on this celebration. To mark the start of Sesame Street's 37th season, I'd like to get 37 posts (but wouldn't it be cool if we had a whole lot more?) from all of you, on your own blogs, that I will link from here on August 14, in a gigantic linky-love extravaganza. Don't worry - your post doesn't have to be about Sesame Street, but it should answer this question:

What television, music, movie or book from your childhood are you excited about sharing with your own children?

Already, there has been a wonderful response. I would love to hear yours. Here is just a sampling of answers:

EricHermanMusic of Cool Tunes for Kids wrote:

Musically, the Sesame Street songs (mostly by Jeff Moss) are of a musical theatre nature, but in the very best sense of being hummable, humorous and mostly upbeat. If you watch the show day in and day out, there might be some blah songs here and there, but many of them are great, and if you watch or listen to a "best of" collection with Sesame Street songs it's a truly incredible list of memorable tunes

Jeff of Out With the Kids shared this:

...the world will be introduced to a new Muppet: Abby Cadabby. Abby is the first new female character in 13 years. She is a young, pink "fairy-in training" and is the daughter of a Fairy Godmother. According to Sesame Street, her catch-phrase will be "that's so magic". While the character does seem overtly marketable, the addition of a strong female muppet was long overdue and should be applauded.

Many of us grew up with shows like this. I think it is amazing to see what the Lovely Mrs. Davis is doing. So you have a bit of a head start. I only gave you two samplings. She wants to reach 37. Come on, people! We can so smash 37!

Join us in this fun and be sure to not only comment here that you participated, but let The Lovely Mrs. Davis know as well.

I know I am going to play!

Have you seen the new character??

SS is bringing in a new muppet: Addy the Fairy. Beyond being the first new character in 13 years, she is the first female muppet on Sesame Street.

She will highlight the challenges of being different.

What fun!

I love this idea, thanks for spreading the word. Hopefully my toddler will someday appreciate the defining books, music and movies from my adolescence. I know I can't wait to share them with her as she gets older.

Left on Seasame Street, right down Memory Lane

I jumped in as well! It was so funny, because as I was reading this, Seasame Street was playing in the background lol. I had fun with a little diversion from my normal blogging program to participate!

A few notes here...

A few notes here...

Anyone remember the Magic Garden? Paula and Carol? Sherlock the squirrel and the story box? Chuckle patch?

That said, I'm not a mom, but I adore reading to my godson the book I learned to read with--"Mickey Mouse and the Haunted House." Yes, it's the same copy I had when I was 3-4. Poor Noah. I don't let him hold it, but boy does he love reading it when he comes to Aunt Cass' house!

Nostalgia

I grew up on Sesame Street, Electric Company, and The Muppet Show. I think that Sesame Street is the only show from my childhood that is still in production, and my kids have loved it too. I remember the story line about how no one believed that Snuffy the Snuffalupagus was real. Every time that Big Bird would try to show him to one of the other characters something would happen to prevent them from seeing him. They all thought he was Big Bird's imaginary friend. Funny, the stuff you remember!

My husband and I have borrowed DVDs, from the local library, of some of the shows we used to watch when we were kids. They still hold up. Our kids are excited to see these "new" shows.

Sesame Street made babysitting bearable

I didn't particularly enjoy babysitting when I was a teen, but I loved watching Sesame Street with the kids.

Great idea from Mrs. Davis! I posted about it today too.

I love this idea -- and best of all, it provided some much-needed inspiration for a new post! My answers are here: http://www.zandria.us/archives/000835.html

Still watching Sesame Street after all these years!

Sesame Street is as old as I am. Now i have children but seriously i think i would still watch every now and then when i had the chance. I absolutely love this new character Abby Cadabby. Sesame Street needed a new positive female character.

You know......I LOVED SS as a kid..but now...

I think it is a pale shadow compared to what we were watching in the 70's.

My kids don't even really like it, except for that damn Elmos World.
