Friday Film Fun: Steamin' up the big screen

A big thanks to Blogher's own Elisa Camahort for pointing me to this blog post about sexy movie favorites. It's the purrrrfect lead in to this week's "Film Fun" topic.

What makes a movie "hot n steamy?" What makes a sex scene between main characters believable? Is it more of a turn on when they are in love or just having a fling? Is it more scintillating when the characters are acting out a fantasy or what might really happen between two people? Do the actors have to be attractive to you? As you ponder those questions, I leave you with five of my favorites:

The Lover: This movie from the early 90's starred Jane March and the incredibly handsome Tony Leung as a couple in the midst of a forbidden love affair. What's hotter than forbidden love? The scene where he gives her a bath has been forever etched in my mind.

Bound: Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly steam up the screen as a pair of lesbian ex-cons scheming to swindle a mobster out of his millions. Gina Gershon = hawt.

Y Tu Mama Tambien: This movie stars Gael Garcia Bernal and...oh, I'm sorry, was anyone else in this movie?

An Officer and a Gentleman
: I love Richard Gere in his Navy whites. American Gigolo was on WE last night so I had to include a Gere movie. The chair scene anyone?

In The Mood For Love: I had a hard time narrowing this list down to five picks but in the end, I have to go with another Tony Leung movie. He and Maggie Cheung positively smolder in this film. Their scenes together are the very definition of torrid, even when they aren't having sex.

Someone thank me for not including any Mickey Rourke films!

Let's keep it going: what are your favorite sexy movies and why?

Sexy Movies

Bull Durham.

I loved it because the characters were not sweet young things; they were grown ups. The movie built up the tension and attraction between them beautifully. The actual scene was joyful, too -- which really does it for me. And Kevin Costner was yummy then. Yes he was too!

Bull Durham...yes! plus...The BIg Easy

How could I forget the Bull Durham scene?

I also like Ellen Barkin/Dennis Quaid in the Big Easy. (I like to say a Dennis Quaid movie isn't a Dennis Quaid movie until he takes off his shirt...those abs are *still* completely yummy...)

What I don't like: sex as violence metaphor...what a disappointment when Dave and Maddie finally got it on on Moonlighting, for instance.

One incredibly steamy scene...

Clothes off, heat and intensity and no physcial contact! The night long phone conversation between Jane Garafalo and Ben Chaplin in The Truth About Cats and Dogs.

... offered since Bull Durham has been mentioned. (and still waiting for someone to mention the clay scene in Ghost.)

If you are a Bound fan....

Go to Susie Bright's blog (search her blog for "bound"...) and thank her for the work she did on the film. Gershon and Tilly are amazing but without Susie Bright, I don't think we'd have seen this make any list for any reason. (FYI Susie also has video from Bound... it's worth looking at, if you ummm appreciate Tilly and Gershon or ummm women. heh.)

Sex in Silence: Gritty & Real, Not Slushy &
Romantic

My favourite sex scene, particularly for its realism element - is when the protagonists in "Enemy At The Gates" have sex in public trying not to wake any of their compatriots sleeping, around them. It seems totally believable to me in a way that few sex scenes ever are.

It reminds me of all those past circumstances where I have been forced to have quieter sex than is preferable - you know - camping, staying at the parents house, when guests are in the spare bedroom, on a group holiday in a Tahoe Chalet, that kind of thing.

I actually worked on the titles for this movie and was lucky enough to meet the director, a *very* charming, attractive Frenchman, old enough to be my father, called Jean-Jacques Annaud. Whilst he held court in our office one day, amusing us with stories of his sexual and other exploits, and with no embarassment that his [extremely beautiful] 13-or-so-year-old-daughter was in the room too, it was clear that his sexuality was at the very forefront of his being. He literally oozed sex appeal. It was clearly a strong part of his nature.

I am not suprised, therefore, that he makes it to this list with "The Lover" too.

Soo Many Steamy Movies....

so little time. Enemy at the Gates and Y Tu Mama Tambien, are really good choices, but my pick would be Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek in Desperado. Hayek is beautiful and Banderas just ooozes sex appeal. The two together are just plain hot.

And thank you for not including any Mickey Rourke movies. No really, thank you. : )

Body Heat

The scene in Body Heat with Kathleen Turner and William Hurt, where he breaks the window to get to her... Very hot.

I am a Body Heat Fan

I still have a hard time saying that, because I'm not a William Hurt fan.
