Did everyone have a good weekend? The Caribbean didn't have such a great one, what with Tropical Storm / Hurricane Ernesto churning in our waters.
But that's not the only thing that has been going on lately. Keep on reading to know what else has been on the minds of these ladies:
Lynn Sweeting from Womanish Words discusses a disturbing trend in The Bahamas:
It feels like the new Burning Times. Fanatical, fundamentalist religion is the Creeping Plague of our generation, Sistas, as you well know.
Whenever sexism is being preached in the name of religion, it is definitely cause for concern.
This roundup's entry of good advice comes from Caribbean Colors of Back to Living in Paradise, who writes:
I’ve decided to act like a grown up. I have a show coming up in November and I’m actually painting for it now, rather than starting it 2 weeks before I’m supposed to open.
The thing about acting like a grown up is that no one really tells you: " Okay, right now you're grown UP, ya hear?" So it may be difficult to finally make the complete switch, don't you think?
Karen from Chookooloonks writes about the fact that Survivor for some reason beyond my personal understanding is planning on dividing next season's contestants by race:
I can't imagine what the legitimate purpose of pitting races against each other could possibly be. Call me morbid, but I forsee any conflict or alliance arising among the teams being interpreted as a comment not just on how teams react in a staged setting, but as a statement of fact about how races behave in gross generalities.
I just think it's pathetic to exploit race for ratings and controversy. This one so obviously crosses the line, but I guess that CBS and Mark Burnett Productions only see profits.
Moving on to another serious subject, a subject which everybody in the Caribbean paid a lot of attention to is Ernesto:
Linda from My Barbados Blog gives us updates on the storm's progress:
Ernesto, the first named hurricane of the season, pounded Barbados with rain, and moved across the Caribbean.
Jamaica and the Cayman Islands were prepared for a direct hit, but they lucked out when Ernesto made turn to the north.
These storms are never fun. I know this because I had gone through three of them in one year. My thoughts are with all of those in the path of Ernesto.
Jess from An American in SXM posts something much more pleasing to the eye, pictures of Saint Maarten on a Sunday.
Mikaila writes about an interesting subject on The Pan Collective: Online Dating.
This is what she had to say:
Dating in Jamaica is hard. Believe me. I know. I have stories that could be episodes of Sex and the City.
I'd dare say that dating in the Caribbean is hard. Or perhaps, dating -- period is hard?
What do you think?
In other romance news, titilayo from Gallimaufry writes about the fact that the:
The Prime Minister of Barbados recently got married. The newspaper story about the wedding reported that his new wife was formerly his executive assistant, and that the couple has a five year old daughter (althought I’ve also seen her age reported as seven years) together. Which many Bajans found interesting because five years ago, the Prime Minister was still legally married to his first wife.
The Leader of the Opposition has not neglected the opportunity to use these circumstances as political fodder.
Ouch! Politics is such a dirty business.
Attilah from Four Fingers and a Thumb tackles an important subject when she discusses activism and journalism:
So the latest in the whole Anthony Wilson saga, is that he's now taken the issue to some Commonwealth Journalist's Forum. He's asked a Professor Pearson of Australia about whether I can be a reporter and an activist.
I think a responsible person can be both at the same time.
That was about it for this time, but don't forget to check out the Caribbean blogroll for more blogs. More blogs = good!
