Nora Ephron’s “I Remember...Nothing” Prompted Me to Remember
By HomeRearedChef on December 19, 2012
I just finished reading Nora Ephron’s “I Remember...Nothing”, and though I in every respect enjoyed the book, said to be “Breathlessly funny....” by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, (and I agree because I did laugh at some points), I nonetheless poured tears throughout the book; I guess I found the hidden sadness. And much of how she viewed life, I found I can relate.
I relate (from page 45, My Aruba) to having spent the entire work-day smiling with spinach on my teeth and no-one, not my so-called workmates, had the decency to point it out.
I relate (from page 65, I Just Want to Say: The Egg-White Omelette) to “you can never have too much butter.”
I relate (from page 102, The Six Stages of E-Mail) to being Infatuated with e-mail at first, then receiving Clarification about what e-mails really are and do, and Confusion, Disenchantment, Accommodation, and finally Death of e-mail: “Call me.”
I also relate to page 119, The D Word, (Divorce), and page 127, The O Word, (Old Age).
But pages 132, What I Won’t Miss, and 134, What I Will Miss, prompted me to remember my own Won’t and Will.
I Won’t Miss:
My teenage years or early twenties
Dating (I went through a bad choice of boyfriends, like drinking cheap beer on a hot day)
Jumping out of bed (staggering tired) at the wee hours of the morning for work
Moving: packing and un-packing and moving from house to house
Messy, icky, monthly periods
I Will Miss:
The figure of my youth (supple skin and no wrinkles)
Feeling pretty and sometimes even beautiful
Eating to my heart’s content
The day I gave my heart to Jesus (indescribable, unmatched joy)
Giving birth to my three children (an extension of me)
Giving birth to my first born (that newborn smell will linger forever in my memory)
Finally finding my soul mate, obviously meant for a lifetime
Oh, and by the way, I also plan on making Ruthie’s Bread and Butter Pudding (from page 117), which, according to Nora Ephron, no-one could duplicate. But it sounds wonderfully simple and delicious, and a must try!
We dream a life to be; we live to dream that life! (vka)
