Welcome to a Month of Pies! I'll be blogging every day this month on the subject of everyone's favorite circular pastry: PIE. Here's why:

  • Because I get to call it NaBloPieMo.

  • Because high mucketymucks in the food world are predicting "the new cupcake" -- pie will be big in 2011. (Quote from a mucketymuck: “This is not just sweet pies, this is savory pies, bite-sized pies. They are even blended into milkshakes." Huh.)

  • Because if the supremely awesome Evan Kleiman of Good Food can bake a pie a day, I can surely blog a pie a day.*

  • pumpkin and pecan pies

    Image: Cameron Nordholm via Flickr.

  • Because even though "easy as pie" is something of an oxymoron (I'll never understand why it's not "easy as toast"), it's also not that hard -- so why am I such a chicken about it? (Mmmm, chicken pot pie.)

  • Because the tradition of pie-naming is delicious in itself. Silk! Chiffon! Grasshopper! Shoofly! Refrigerator!

  • Because there are no such idioms as Miss American Cake, sweetie cake, patootie cake, cake in the sky, a finger in every cake, nice as cake or shut your cake hole. It's not a competition, but … advantage: pie.

  • Because it's November, and Thanksgiving's coming up, and I can't stop thinking about pie.

*Note: I am not committing to actually bake a pie a day -- but I’m starting out with one and we'll see how it goes. And alas, I am a crappy food photographer, but today I made a Pumpkin pie with walnut topping from Buns in My Oven in honor of last month's Month of Pumpkins.

It was good.

What's your favorite pie? And what do you want to talk about in this month of pies?

I think I would be sick with nerves with that pressure. I mean....you just don't want to mess that up!

Now, are you saying the recipe was average? Or how your baking came out? lol

Curious why you left such an amazing job like that! That is SO cool that you were there. :)

Only in my mind...everyone else just thought it was an average apple pie...

Did they taste famous?

my husband and sons LOVE pie. I have an apple pie in the oven right now (made using a vodka crust).

Have you seen pies made in tiny mason jars? that's next on my list (because I have extra dough).

Hey Julie!!

Love this idea of a pie each day this month! I’ve got your ULTIMATE PIE STORY THOUGH!!! When I used to WORK AT MARTHA STEWART, I received AN EMAIL FROM MARTHA saying she was delivering some apples to the office from the “plethora” her orchard had produced.

My mind began racing on how I could use them…then I got chills! I WOULD MAKE AN APPLE PIE USING MARTHA’S FAMILY RECIPE WITH THE APPLES FROM MARTHA’S OWN ORCHARD! — I don’t think you can ever get over something of this magnitude when the “baking” stars align! I still have never recovered from this!

I have got to get to Green Chile Kitchen. It is a crime that I live in SF and haven't been there yet.

LOVE caramel in pies. Yours is making my mouth water.

with shrimp, and two kinds of white fish inside. It was truly heavenly. And Denise -- no crust!

I totally agree and have been craving pie. Something about November screams pie. Perhaps, it's the anticipation leading up to the day to end all other cooking days. Or the fact that apples are dropping from the trees into freshly baked crusts. Perhaps not. I posted a recipe for a Caramel Apple Pie on our blog today http://ht.ly/33lcD.

As for pie milkshakes, there's a place in SF called Green Chile Kitchen that boasts a Blackberry Pie Milkshake. I think what may be most intriguing about it is the texture. Though I'd hate to guess the calorie count... :)

I'm all for November being pie month & love the challenge!

That looks amazing. Is it potatoes on top? Or just fish?

That is one of the things this month is all about -- I am going to see once and for all if it's worth it. And I plan to have a taste-off with some of the purchased crusts so please, if you have a favorite let me know.

Pecan pie is one of my favorites. All nut pies are my favorite, actually. Don't make me choose.

Those are all on my list to discuss this month.
Mind you I am no pie expert. This is my bid to try to make myself more of one, so you will see a lot of failed pie experiments and links to better bloggers in this space :)

Number of topics I wish, wish, wish you'd cover: (1) pie birds -- yay or nay. (2) how do you keep the bottom of an apple pie from getting soggy (the type of pie with a top crust). (3) er...a good apple pie recipe. (4) for those of us who can't use lard, what are the best alternatives that are vegetarian?

because I don't like crust. Except pumpkin pie - for that I make exceptions.

I do, however, like a month of ANYTHING and plan to have a lot of fun with you this month. heh

I do love pie (except pumpkin) but Pecan Pie is my hands down favorite as far as dessert pies go.

I do like chicken pot pie but no one else in my family does. Quiche is good too.

Can't wait to see Sassymonkey's pie menu.

I don't mess with making pie crust. Good old fashioned Pillsbury's folded crust in a box or the frozen Pet-Ritz (not sure of the name) works for me. I don't like to cook and am not much of a baker.

I'm pleased to report that I finally mastered pie crust. Smitten Kitchen has a tutorial that is amazing.

I also make a mean Chicken Pot Pie.

I haven't yet solved for the problem of what to do with all this pie. I commute to work by train and don't have a pie-safekeeping device, and don't have enough neighbors to share with ...

If you'd like a cinematic version of pies that is sheer poetry, check out "Waitress" 2007. It's a great indie picture by a female director. It's not really about pies, but pies become a central character. You would love it, 7.2 stars out of 10 on IMBD for iPhone. It also features a cameo role for an ancient Andy Griffith that's absolutely adorable.

I will be doing LOTS of crust experimentation and keeping you posted!

We're planning a meal around pie. We're not sure when but it's going to have mini-quiche appetizers, some sort of main course pie (chicken pot pie? tortiere?) and of course pie for dessert.

Yay pie!

Pies always make me think of my grandma. In fact, one of my first memories of her is helping her bake them in the kitchen (and making sugar pies out of the scraps of crust dough).

I've had pies on the brain too, as I'm working to perfect her various recipes. The part I'm struggling with the most? Getting that perfect crust nailed down.

Can't wait for the rest of NaBloPieMo!
