National Blog Posting Month

The time has finally arrived: it's November's NaBloPoMo, the birthday of this blogging project AND its first month being in its new space on BlogHer.com. We are so glad that you've joined us. If you're new to NaBlo, you can learn more about its history here. Now, let's get this blogging party started!

November is the only month that doesn't have a separate theme. Instead, the theme for November is blogging for blogging's sake. As we always do in November, there will be prizes for participants who are writing daily. We have prompts lined up from writers and bloggers. And we'll be posting writing advice to cheer you on (sort of like water tables at a marathon) throughout the month.

You can currently sign up for November's NaBloPoMo by adding your blog name and url to the form. The blogroll is open until 11 pm EST on the 5th, at which time it will close to new entries. There are no categories for November in order to make it easier to use the list to choose the prize winners. Therefore, we'll just need your blog, blog url, and email address to use in case you win a prize. If you plan to use BlogHer.com for your daily posting, please put your member profile address as your blog url.

Of course, we'll also be syndicating great posts that we find from NaBloPoMo-ers and point more eyes -- as well as a paycheck -- to your post. And we'll be featuring posts that run on BlogHer, so make sure your signature is up-to-date.

About those prizes ... We will have a daily prize draw for people on the blogroll.

  • Monday – BlogHer ’12 conference pass
  • Tuesday – Book from Penguin Publishing
  • Wednesday – $50 Visa gift card
  • Thursday – Book from Penguin Publishing

These prizes are just a thank you for participating in this big blogging celebration; for writing for writing's sake and doing it as a community.

So what are you waiting for? Sign up and start blogging!

[Editor's note: For legal reasons, entry in the sweepstakes is limited to residents of the United States and most of Canada. But no matter where you live, you can (and should) add yourself to the blogroll and participate in the glorious madness that is NaBloPoMo by blogging daily on your own blog and/or on BlogHer.com in November. You do not need to be a resident of the U.S. or Canada to have your post showcased on BlogHer.com or selected for syndication. So go forth and blog!]

Help! I had an account at the end of this month and thought I'd added to the blog roll but apparently have not. I'm blogging daily but am I supposed to have posted daily on blogher? I'm doing something wrong :/. And I can't find the FAQ anymore /sigh/.

You don't actually need to be on the blogroll in order to participate, and unfortunately, the blogroll is closed. Luckily, you can still blog every day, link your posts in the open thread or cross-post on BlogHer. That's really what NaBloPoMo is all about.

Melissa Ford Thank you Melissa [I'm way impressed with how much you're working here!!!]

Um... Not to sound like a total newb... but open thread?! Cross Post? Anyone?

fringster 5 pts

Hello, I have a question: Can I just post any topic for each day of the month in my blog or do I need to follow the "Question of the Day" topic suggested by BlogHer? I'm confused!

Melissa Ford 42 pts

fringster

The prompts are there if you want them, or ignore them if you don't.

Bon_Steele 6 pts

While I have been blogging for a long time, I have never done an event like this before. Looking forward to the fun!

whencrazyseemsnormal 5 pts

where is the blogroll for the blogs taking part in the November challenge?

texasebeth 27 pts

I just signed up. We shall see how it goes.

texasebeth 27 pts

So do Wordless Wednesday posts with photos count?

Melissa Ford 42 pts

texasebeth

Absolutely -- and it's a great way to get a post in.

What do they say? A picture is worth 1000 words? :-)

burgmom624 5 pts

I signed up yesterday. My first time NoBloPoMo ing. Is that a word? LOL.

Blue State Cowgirl 6 pts

Are there any plans to organize the NaBloPoMo roll by category or at least alphabetically? Impossible to scan it or use it as one long disorganized list.

yolandanichole 5 pts

I just signed up my new blog. My intention is to post there daily anyway so this will provide more incentive.

I'm signed up for another 'Mo project so this month should be interesting to say the least!

lainierenee 19 pts

I am super excited to do this! Yay!

TortoiseMum 8 pts

When you say "Ning" site, do you mean this: http://nablopomo.blogher.com/ Is this bit that is no longer active and we don't have to post in?

Sorry, as a total noob at this I'm confused.

Melissa Ford 42 pts

TortoiseMum

Yes, that is the old Ning site that is closing tonight. From this point on, all NaBloPoMo activity will be over here.

RWGmom 9 pts

I did it last year but I'm not sure if I did it correctly. Do I have to post here also or can I simply post on my own blog site?

thanks!

Melissa Ford 42 pts

RWGmom

You can post here, or on your blog, or both. If you also post here, you can get more eyes on your writing, but you don't have to post here in order to participate in NaBloPoMo.

labuenavida 12 pts

I'm new to the NaBloPoMo world--how exactly does it work? Are prompts posted in advance, or just the morning of?

Melissa Ford 42 pts

labuenavida

Prompts go up the night before, and you can either use them or not. Some people like to have the idea for their post outlined for them, others like to just free write. There's no right or wrong way to do NaBloPoMo.

Quiet MOMents 6 pts

Is there a word count requirement?

Also - I was thinking of starting a brand new blog for this challenge. Or, do you suggest I use my current one?

Melissa Ford 42 pts

Afox

No word count minimum -- it's all up to you. And you can use any blog you wish for this project.

Redquill 6 pts

I just joined but I haven't figured out where my new blog is yet.

DanielleBarnsley 12 pts

I'm in! Should be interesting, to say the very least!

Kathy Benson 15 pts

Okay, I'm in! Another NaBloPoMo virgin here and there's no turning back now (I already filled out the form and submitted it)... I am excited and a bit nervous (mostly excited though)! :)

KarenLynnn 449 pts

My first time too! Anxious to give it a shot :)

outsidevoice 5 pts

I've tried every year to finish - and never have. Could THIS be the year?!

FabCoffeeMom 6 pts

I'm in, it will be my first time!

Kathy Benson 15 pts

Still on the fence but leaning in favor of giving it a go. Going to take another day or two to consider it...

Nancy Hill 14 pts

I'm doing it! AND I'm gonna finish my nonfiction book too. The time is right! Only one question... what should I use as a badge on my site?

Call Her Happy 7 pts

Wow! That is quite the task: demanding and fun! I'm going to have to do some planning and then I can join you!

I am also trying to do the novel writing idea this November. We'll see what happens...

I've succeeded all the previous years so I hope I'll manage it again. I'll miss having Eden run it so I wondered if I'd do it but a friend who is reinvigorating her blog is doing it so we're partnering. Also, thank goodness for mobile blogging.
