A Discovery of Witches: The Magical Vampire Story for Grown Ups

As an adult who shamelessly enjoyed reading the entire Harry Potter series and the entire Twilight series, I suspected I would enjoy reading Deborah Harkness's novel, A Discovery of Witches. Perhaps there is a hint of witch in me, with the gift of precognition, because I was right.  Read more >

I Hoped For More From A Discovery of Witches

Before I opened the book, A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness seemed like it would be right up my fantasy-lovin' alley. Vampires, witches, a mystery involving a manuscript found in the Bodleian library at Oxford -- the book seemed like it might have been written to please me.And then I read it. All 579 pages of it.  Read more >

A Discovery of Witches: Ysabeau Was My Favorite

There's nothing quite like being smacked in the face with a hardback book. Knowing that I'd fallen asleep yet again was not enough to deter me though. I had to read more, I had to know what happened next.   Read more >

Deborah Harkness Creates the Perfect Potion

A Discovery of Witches turned out to be the perfect potion, seemingly made of a some of the last decade’s greatest hits: a dash of Harry Potter, a smidge of The Time Traveler’s Wife, and a pinch of The DaVinci Code. Don’t get me wrong, this work is most uniquely its own, but there were glimmers of each of these other pop-culture phenoms included in its intricately woven plot.  Read more >

Life Lessons in A Discovery of Witches

I read a LOT of nonfiction. Fiction can be difficult for me. I want to feel that I'm learning something when I read, so I can be a bit snobby about plot lines. When I do end up with a fiction novel, I still seek out lessons buried within the story. I like to remember the lines that really spoke to me, so I dog-ear the bottoms of the pages where they appear.  Read more >

Was A Discovery of Witches Worth The Read? YES!

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness is a wonderful, in depth look to a world of witches, vampires and daemons. This story delves into a fantasy world of such detail, all while keeping you firmly rooted in modern day England. While this novel is to a point about a forbidden love between species, I do not know if it would be the right fit for a “Twihard” or readers of that nature.  Read more >

It's a GOOD vampire novel, I promise!

I need to warn you up front: Deborah Harkness' novel, A Discovery of Witches is part one of a trilogy, and the second book isn't scheduled to come out until next year. I say "warn you" because I made it a third of the way through the book before I read the dust jacket and learned the tale of Dr. Diana Bishop wouldn't be complete for a few more years.  Read more >

A Discovery of Witches: Not the Normal Teen Witchcraft Scene

If you've been rolling your eyes at popular young adult vampire novels, Deborah Harkness' A Discovery of Witches will appeal to your need for realistic historical detail mixed with deeper storylines, and deeper characters.  Read more >

A Discovery of Witches Left Me Wondering [SPOILERS]

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness is a fantasy novel that weaves stories of love, history, and adventure into it's pages. The book begins at Oxford in England. Diana Bishop appears to be an ordinary, young professor of Alchemy that spends a lot of time in the  Read more >

A Discovery of Witches: A Grown-Up Witch & Vampire Romance

This month’s BlogHer Book Club selection was A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. If you’re looking for a grown-up book about the romance of a witch and a vampire, this is a great one. What I loved most was how Harkness not only told a wonderfully imaginative story, she wove elements of history into her narrative.  Read more >
