This is the first Sarah Dessen book I have ever read and I am so happy to have been introduced to this author through What Happened to Goodbye. It is wonderful summer reading that you won't want to put down.

I admit it. I fully expected to find What Happened to Goodbye, Sarah Dessen's destined-for-the-Young-Adult-Bestseller-list latest release, trite and predictable.
It was neither. Dessen creates realistic characters who speak in authentic voices and navigate complex conflicts that do not seem crafted or manipulated for the page. Very few writers manage to capture teen dialogue in a way that rings true, and I never found myself bumped outside of the reading experience while reading What Happened to Goodbye by awkward prose.

Even at thirty five years old, it is sometimes nice to reflect back on what it was like to be seventeen. Sarah Dessen's novel What Happened to Goodbye did just that. In a story which feels like a glimpse in seventeen year old Mclean Sweet's journal, no matter the age of the reader it would not take much to connect with the characters here. Read more >

I just finished reading What Happened to Goodbye by Sarah Dessen. It was a great light summertime read! I would equate this book to a good “chick flick” at the movies. Initially What Happened to Goodbye reads as a light teen romance, but as the tale unfolds it is obvious there is more involved. The story covers a couple of topics including friendship, family, changes, growing up and divorce. The main character, Mclean, is a teenager suffering the effects of her parents’ divorce.
