There doesn’t seem to be a shortage of nurses where I live…which sucks for me. I know it’s barely been a week since I got my license number, but I’ve already filled out over 30 applications & just about all of them have been denied! If I get one more, “Thank you, but we’ve decided to go with anyone other than you…” email I might lose it.
Now that we live in a high-tech world everything about applying for a job is computerized. Back in the day I could physically go to a place of business, fill out an application, & hand my résumé to the hiring manager. That usually got me at least 5 minutes to work my charm with the person in charge. That’s all I’m asking for…5 minutes with a nurse manager.
I thought getting my LPN & working as a nurse for a couple of months would at least get me an interview or two. Instead of getting interviews I’ve been getting rejected multiple times a day. You know what the kicker is? I’ll apply for a job & within an hour my application status will go from, “We’ve received your application…” to “We’ve selected to further pursue several more qualified applicants, not including you…” It’s like a kick in the stomach – at least pretend to consider me for 24 hours!
It seems that getting a nursing job is a lot like getting any other job – most of the time it’s not what you know, but who you know. I think it’s time I start working my connections…
