What does good nutrition mean to you? Do you still consider sugar one of the four food groups? Is eating healthy one of your goals for 2009?
Here are some easy nutrition tips to keep in mind for good health...
1. Eat more vegetables - the recommended amount of vegetables is 2 1/2 cups each day.
2. Read nutrition labels before you buy.
3. Reduce or eliminate processed sugar (like soda). Try to limit your total sugar intake to less than 48 grams each day.
4. Avoid fatty foods (like chips and ice cream). Try to limit your fat intake to less than 50 grams each day.
5. Limit sodium intake to less than 2400 milligrams each day.
6. Try to get at least 45 grams of protein each day.
7. Drink plenty of water. Here is a hydration calculator that will tell you the amount that is recommended for you.
8. Increase your intake of superfoods (like walnuts, flaxseed, salmon, pomegranate and green tea)

Water Dehydration
Very detailed post with lots of useful info. Thanks. I tried the water hydration chart and was surprised to see that I still don't drink enough water also I was sure (with all those bathroom visits) that I was.

Most of us are not drinking enough water.
Thanks Maria. I think most of us aren't drinking the amount of water we should be, but it's an easy fix.

Another tip: make it tasty!
The best way to make sure you stick with a healthy eating plan is to eat foods that you enjoy. Recently I've been making a lot of chocolate covered strawberries for dessert. When made with dark chocolates, it's a dish that's filled with antioxidants, and it's relatively low-cal for a dessert. Of course, you need to eat it in moderation, but this is true for everything.

Thanks for the nutrition tips!
This year, instead of trying the "lose weight" goal, I'm trying to eat healthier. Thanks for the healthy reminders. And thanks, Vered, for the dark chocolate tip ;)

I love how so many healthy
I love how so many healthy lifestyle articles/blogs talk about eating more veggies. When one thinks of healthy foods, steak hardly makes the list. Do what the Chicago health commissioner Dr. Terry Mason says, and go veg for the month of January. And then, who knows...you might like it:) http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/lifestyle/health/chi-going-vegeta...

healthy eating
Good tips, Catherine! I find the surest way to eat well is to buy seasonal produce. It's fresher, more flavorful, and is often on sale. Oh, and you can't beat a well-stocked pantry with items such as whole grains, olive oil, and lentils.
Good Food
Just browsing through the produce section of any good grocery store is enough to inspire you to eat fresher and better. Thanks for these reminders.

Pulling Out All the Stops
I've spent the past the four months on the losing end of the battle against preschool germs. I've never been so sick. So I'm pulling out all the stops. I've always eaten well, worked out and taking a multi-vitamin. Now I also take extra Vitamin D, garlic, Vitamin C and probiotics. Plus, I use a netti pot with saline solution everyday. I'm starting to feel better. Sometimes you just have to do whatever possible to take care of yourself.

The netti pot freaks me out a little.
Hi Tracy. I know there is a lot of hoopla surrounding the netti pot...But I have to admit, it freaks me out a little and I'm not sure I would have the courage to try it. Do you use it regularly, or just when you are stuffy? Is it one of those things that when you stop using it the problem comes back? Just wondering.

If you have to pick just one
I think of all the ideas listed, getting sugar out of our diet could be the most important thing we do. I think it's very powerful because if you eliminate sugar, you'll start eating more healthy overall because sugar is in practically all packaged and processed food! Eating more veggies will follow, naturally, as your taste buds expect less of a sweet 'pop' from food and can begin to appreciate the sweetness of, say, squash.
