The Obama campaign has launched a new website aimed at parents. The site, Parents For Obama, is aimed to be a social networking hub for supporters and those who just want to find out more -- including information about President Obama’s work to help children and families during his past four years in office, as well as online tools for local organizing and volunteering.
The site’s feel is friendly and users can join groups based on neighborhoods or form their own groups. "The number one source that women trust in deciding who to vote for is women like them -- the woman next to them at work, in yoga class, in book club," says Kate Chapek, National Women’s Vote Director for the Obama campaign. The website also includes stories and videos from Barack and Michelle Obama, as well as moms and dads from a variety of backgrounds. Check out this video featuring the First Lady reflecting on what it was like for her, as a mother, helping Sasha and Malia transition to the White House.
And besides the feel-good element, the site also offers information on President Obama’s work in key areas of interest to families, such as:
Healthcare: The Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, makes health insurance more accessible and allows young Americans to stay on their parents’ insurance plans until age 26, and all new insurance plans are now required to cover certain preventive services, like immunizations, routine check-ups, and prenatal care, without charging a co-pay or deductible.
Education: Head Start and Early Start expansions reached 64,000 more children and families, and new policies allow states to opt out of No Child Left Behind regulations
Workplace Flexibility: Family and Medical Leave Act benefits granted to same-sex partners, and telecommuting and flexible schedules promoted among federal employees.
College: funding for Pell Grants expanded, fighting to keep student loan rates from doubling.
And for bloggers, the Parents for Obama site will soon offer downloadable Parents for Obama, Dads for Obama and Mama for Obamas badges.
