OFFICIAL BLOGHER '10 LIVEBLOG: The White House Project - Welcome with Marie Wilson and Lisa Stone

BlogHer Original Post

Welcome to the liveblog of the White House Project panel: Welcome with Marie Wilson, Founder and President of the White House Project, and Lisa Stone, Co-Founder and CEO of BlogHer.

Lisa Stone introduced the session, introducing some of the amazing statistics gathered by BlogHer about women bloggers and how influential we are. She spent time emphasizing how in order to reach voters, particularly women voters, is still a word-of-mouth effort, and women who blog care about hard news - social issues, the economy, the environment. Blogging is powerful. Bloggers want to talk to the candidates, not third party sources. Quote from Rita Arens: "The candidate who stops treating women as having just one facet of their personalities will make lots of inroads with the voters." This is an important thing to remember.

Marie Wilson learned in her work with the Ms. Foundation that women's voices and visions are powerful and where they take them really matters. Asking women just to participate in get-out-the-vote (GOTV) initiatives isn't enough. So she founded The White House Project.

"Blogging and social media is going to transform politics." "I think you are part of a transformational movement for politics." You can't be what you can't see, and what you have cone is really make it possible for people to see visible and viable women. Economic power is also essential, she says.

Ms. Wilson also speaking about TWHP EPIC Awards and how it's important to recognize women who do good work in politics and how they work together, across the aisle to make important changes.

TWHP has produced trainings for candidates all over the country at various levels, including one with O magazine for 88 women. They have trained 10,000 women to date. (Applause, well deserved.)

Now on to the next session, Call to Action, led by Jill Miller Zimon.
