If you're lucky, you'll get old. When you get there, what good will you be?

I thought I'd look around at some old people and let you draw your own conclusions about what old people are good at doing.

Karen Armstrong, born in 1944

Karen Armstrong is a former nun who is traveling the world working and speaking for compassion. She has written several books. Here is Karen Armstrong giving a TED Talk.

Old people are so wise and compassionate.

More about Karen Armstrong:

Nancy Wilson, born in 1937

Nancy Wilson is a jazz vocalist. Her most recent album was released in 2007. Here she is putting a poem by Maya Angelou to music in a performance in 2007. (I don't have to point out the obvious about Maya Angelou, do I?)

Old people are so full of mastery of their art.

More about Nancy Wilson:

Alice Walker, born in 1944

Alice Walker is a writer, a "womanist" and an activist.

Alice Walker in Gaza (part 1 of 3) being interviewed by Democracy Now. (Oh look, she cut off her beautiful dreadlocks!)

Old people are so influential and spiritually powerful.

More about Alice Walker:

Ronni Bennett, born in 1941

Ronni Bennett a blogger who is investigating and talking about what it means to grow old. She's collecting a whole tribe of proud elderbloggers who are delighted to let the world know how old they are.

Old people are so innovative and dedicated to leading us away from ageism.

More about Ronni Bennett:

More people being old

The Elders are an independent group of eminent global leaders, brought together by Nelson Mandela, who offer their collective influence and experience to support peace building, help address major causes of human suffering and promote the shared interests of humanity.

Elder Wisdom Circle where elders from 60–100 offer advice to anyone who asks for it.

The International Council Of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers represent a global alliance of prayer, education and healing for our Mother Earth, all Her inhabitants, all the children, and for the next seven generations to come.

Whether elders are spirtual leaders, writers, musicians, bloggers, volunteers, or grandparents: old people are so awesome.

Glad you read and enjoyed the post. I would put you and your blog, Sage's Play, in the same category with these women.

I really enjoyed this post of yours. But I wish the camera was not aimed at Karen Armstrong from below as if to place special attention on her older woman chin area. Sigh. Vanity vanity.

Very enjoyable post, Virginia! And an important message.

I think I'll forward this to my 74-year-old mom, who is most DEFINITELY not old!

It's so true that our perceptions change. I remember when I thought 18 was really old!

That made me smile, Virginia. Also the concept of people being old at 65 is funny to me now, it so doesn't jive with my perceptions (although I'll go with your definition.)

I worked in senior services for years and grew up around many older adults, and have always known and appreciated the value of their stories. I've also always appreciated what Ronni's doing, I just hope it catches on even more. Because you know, someday, we'll all be (or have been) elder bloggers - like you say, if we're lucky. What are we doing if not creating a digital history?

Your links here are awesome. This is a fantastic post.
