From Slashing Calories to Cutting Carbohydrates: Why Has Dieting Become so Violent?

Ever thought about how violently we discuss dieting? We refer to "slashing" calories and "cutting" carbohydrates. We congratulate friends for "carving down" their bodies. 

Then there's the entire world of different weight loss plans. The most popular ones seem to involve "eliminating" (sounds like the Mafia) food groups. 

The Paleo plan (hello, caveman) slashes dairy, cuts out grains and loses the legumes, for example.  Low-carb high fat diet experts sometimes also recommend eliminating fruits.
