In case you haven’t heard, Eve Ensler hopes you will be dancing somewhere today. Ensler, the celebrated author of “The Vagina Monologues,” is the force behind One Billion Rising, a global campaign to demand an end to violence against women and girls using dance.
There will be events, demonstrations and flash mobs from India to Ireland, with nearly 200 countries participating. Jane Fonda will be dancing in downtown LA. In London, women and men will release 109 red balloons to remember the 109 women who were murdered by men last year. A Labour member of Parliament will be dancing outside the House of Commons.
There’s even a special song for the campaign called “Break the Chains,” which will be performed by millions of people dancing in the streets.
If you’d like to join in—and who wouldn’t?--here’s choreographer Debbie Allen teaching the routine:
It’s going to be a remarkable day. But we shouldn’t lose sight of the brutal reason for the campaign: one in three women will be raped or suffer domestic violence in her lifetime. This is how Ensler’s organization, V-Day, came up with the idea of inspiring 1 billion people on a single day to dance. Because dance is universal and powerful. Because she felt it would draw attention to a global problem that affects countries rich and poor. And because that’s the number of women and girls who will be beaten or sexually assaulted.
One billion women and girls.
Here’s what some of them said on Twitter about why they’re participating in today’s global event:
