One Billion Rising and #BeyondOBR This Valentine's Day
It's Valentine's Day, but it's also One Billion Rising-- an international event to call attention to violence against women. Started by Eve Ensler, the event aims to get one billion people out into public spaces in over 200 countries to dance and gather safely to demand justice for women and girls who have been victims of gender violence.
However, One Billion Rising and the larger V-Day movement is controversial, too, especially during a year when feminists of color have been working to make the issues of minority women more visible. Native feminists in Canada have for decades been using Valentine's Day to acknowledge the victims of violence against women in the Women's Memorial March. This year, One Billion Rising is not organizing events in Canada on February 14, and is asking Canadians to stage their events on March 8 -- International Women's Day.
