One in Three Women Receives A Hysterectomy By Age 60: Is That Necessary?

I recently interviewed a top physician at the Mayo Clinic about the excessive use of hysterectomies in this country. Although non-invasive alternatives have been developed, health insurance companies generally do not provide coverage for them. In their view, a hysterectomy is less expensive than local treatment for disease because it is definitive (if the uterus is gone, it can't cause any more problems, right?) However, hysterectomies can cause women to miss months of work while they recover, while non-invasive treatments like focused ultrasound are generally painless and may require only a few hours to days to recover. Yet, this is not a cost-saver for the insurance company (maybe it is for the patient and their employer) so they have no incentive to pay for the procedure.

Sadly, many women are not getting the best care and are not being made aware of all their treatment options.

To read more about this problem, please check out my original post and interview with Dr. Stewart.

If a woman asks for a hysterectomy, the doctor should tell her that she'll be at a fairly high risk for hospital infections, and likely lose her desire for sex. Afterwards she's prematurely age, suffer from bone loss early, have to take expensive hormones that are never quite right(bio-identicals come the closest), gain weight uncontrollably, and experience memory loss and fatigue... just to name a few.

Doctors don't usually tell a woman this. They make it sound so easy and convenient and give little information about options. The internet has a do for every don't, and few doctors want to bother with other options. So sad.

I have known a lot of women who beg, plea and shop til they find a doctor who can (and will) justify the hysterectomy because they WANT the hysterectomy and are not interested in any other potential treatments.
