An Open Letter To Oprah Winfrey On Sexual Bullying

Dear Oprah,

Thank you for your show on sexual bullying yesterday. You helped to put a very serious issue under the national spotlight. I'm disappointed, however, that you didn't address that bullying is a learned behavior.

The children who taunted Jaheem, Carl and Ryan (and who presently taunt Chase) were not born sexual bullies. They adopted their behavior — learned it slowly from a variety of individuals, some well-known for their very public anti-gay sentiments.

As a woman and a lesbian who has devoted much of my adult life to raising awareness of all LGBT issues, I can provide you with an extremely long list of people who've contributed to the nightmares of your guests, because they are the same people who contribute to my nightmare and to the nightmares of the LGBT community as a whole.
