Maine's GOP caucus is under way! And you thought there wasn't a lot to do in Maine in winter!
The caucus, which starts today, is actually held over the entire weekend, so voters there have until Sunday to weigh in on their favored Republican -- Maine GOP voters will need to check which day their town is having its caucus.
It should come as no surprise to election watchers that, since every state is different, Maine's GOP caucus is different than in Iowa. This weekend's caucus is probably better described as a presidential preference survey, because no delegates are actually chosen and the results won't bind the delegates at the state convention! But it will give us some idea of which way Maine Republicans are leaning, especially after this week's round of debates, endorsements and candidate withdrawls!
Ron Paul is hoping things go well for him there, especially after he didn't get a lot of attention at the GOP debates at the Reagan library this week.

I'm rooting for Ron Paul. I
I'm rooting for Ron Paul. I initially didn't care too much for him, but I do want to see him get some good results.
Wednesday night there was a Ron Paul demonstration at our local college -- it was nice to see so many young people came out to show their support for him.
An amazing phenomenon
I'm no Ron Paul supporter, but I think he's touched a nerve with many young voters. I continue to be impressed with his grass roots support and the money that his supporters have been able to raise.
I was annoyed that he didn't get much air time during the last GOP debate -- of you're going to have them on the stage, don't ignore them!
A snapshot of Maine
Here's a snapshot of the Maine demographics compared to the rest of the nation ...

... what impact do you think this will have on the ultimate outcome?
Thanks for those
Thanks for those demographics. Holy cats. The percentage below poverty line compared to the nation really struck me -- 12.9 compared to 13.3?
And the percentage of Caucasians, 95%. This doesn't surprise me, but I didn't realize that percentage would be that high.
Found a blogger who says Ron

Thanks for alerting us
I confess - I would have wiled away the day without knowing - thank you. :)

OK, ...
... so it's not the Kodak Theater! ;)
Maine, Are you out there?
Any readers in Maine want to weigh in?
Have you caucused today?? Please share!
I do like that it's the whole weekend.
We need to do that for the general. A whole week of voting!
Could you imagine the turnout?

Imagine the turnout ...
... I'm assuming there are some who want to keep turnout low and so don't lobby for weekend voting or caucusing.
But don't we all benefit from more people casting ballots??
Ron Paul in double digits
Just saw that Mitt Romney is leading by far (50+%) the early returns with McCain second but with Ron Paul in a strong 3rd place with 19%.
I like the weekend thing too
And PunditMom, I love Maine- I really thought I'd end up there as a schoolteacher. I spent many summers there, first at overnight camp then working as a waitress through high school and college in Ogunquit (and a chambermaid and an usher at a summer stock theater!)
Sigh - now I'm missing it - thanks a lot! ;)
Good luck with the caucus.
