Open Thread: Osama bin Laden Is Dead

If you're like me, you've been glued to your news channel of choice waiting for President Obama to come out and make his unanticipated late-night statement about an unidentified national security issue.

Osama bin Laden

While at first reporters refused to speculate (and I was feeling extremely apprehensive about what new front was being opened up) they soon bowed to the pressure of social media (in my opinion) and let fly with their speculation.

The news: Osama bin Laden has been killed, by the U.S., and the U.S. has his body, so his identity has been conclusively confirmed.

This as we approach the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

So, thoughts? I have my own, but why don't you start?

I am a bloggist that spends a LOT of time researching different topics on the internet to back up the TRUTH of a story, BEFORE I report something.

There were youtubes posted several years ago, stating that Bin Laden had died due to kidney failure. According to a number of sources, he was a dialysis patient and was even treated by an American doctor and was visited by a CIA member, even though he was "wanted Dead or Alive".

The stories of his death have not truly been confirmed. There are discrepancies on facial features of the pictures that were shown. A lot is circulating on the internet in the more intellectual chat threads where writers hang out.

It is very convenient for Obama's plans of re-election to have announced this victory. But, just a head's up-- this may NOT be a "fact". More like a "myth" generated to give hope at a time when there is very little to celebrate.

Shortly after this announcement, there are more security measures at our major airports. This is looking like they are trying to usher in "martial law"-- a "police state".

Be very careful in a false celebration of this. If you truly check out the entire truth behind 9/11, you will find that there are many holes in the original story that was reported to the public.

Go to Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth and Dr. Judy Woods.com sites. You will see more of how the buildings actually fell. These buildings collapses were a result of a Controlled Demolition. They did NOT fall due to jet fuel, because Building #7 collapsed that very same day, but was NOT hit by an airplane, so there was no way that jet fuel could have been added to the equation of the building collapse. All 3 buildings fell due to a controlled demolition. The Pentagon was struck by a missile, the plane flew over the building at the same time that the missile struck the building. Check this out on the pics of the single hole which has no indention for the wingspan of a plane.

Americans were fed a manufactured story on 9/11. The whole 9/11 events were staged to help us enter into over seas wars.

Do your homework. Watch the videos and read the article that I just worked on. People need to know the truth behind 9/11. http://hubpages.com/hub/Questioning-the-Official-S...

I worked in the World Trade Center (Two World Trade - or the South Tower) and witnessed the second plane fly into my building on 9/11. Nearly 10 years later, I don't feel any safer knowing that Bin Laden's dead and don't think today should be a day of celebration.

It's amazing to me how 9-11 suddenly seems like yesterday, with this breaking news. I have been wrestling back and forth with feelings on the whole thing. Relief, fear...

Here's a post I wrote about it:
http://www.blogher.com/breaking-news-my-mixed-feel...

I cried this morning watching the Today Show when they had a family on who had lost their daughter in the attack. The raw pain and anguish was too much. It's just not fair.

I agree with you, Susan. It makes me very concerned to see celebrations of a death. Remember when those military contractors were captured and killed in the Middle East a few years back, and how horrified we all were to see the desecration of their bodies and how people rejoiced over the killings? This really seems similarly savage to me.

I have to admit though, if I'd had loved ones killed on 9/11 or who'd been involved in the military actions, I'd likely have a very different stance. It's easy for me to take the high road when I have no direct personal connection...

I posted the following comment over on Mom-101 this morning, and it is equally a propos here:

I understand the relief and closure that bin Laden's death provides. And am not at all sorry that he's dead.

But... death is nothing to celebrate. Neither is war. Innocents get hurt. According to the news reports, a woman was killed because a combatant used her as a human shield.

And I ask myself -- do our celebrations *now* look any better to the other side -- really -- than *their* celebrations did to us nearly 10 years ago? I don't think so, and in that, I fear we create a whole new problem.

I am thrilled that we are uniting as a country this morning... But saddened by the fact that people are dancing in the streets over the loss of life... I know people are going to hate me for saying that... I am glad we got him, I am proud to be an American... I am SO grateful for our troops and our way of life. I guess i will leave it at that.

I didn't expect to have such a powerful reaction to it.

I wonder how much of it is pure reaction and how much of it is being part of, getting caught up in, reacting to, all the discussion in social media.

Perhaps a little of both.

When you celebrate murder, some part of your humanity is being oppressed by your fear.

I wrote about it: http://bit.ly/lZa3V8 and a conversation about it has started here: www.Facebook.com/WildflowerEvolution ( http://www.Facebook.com/WildflowerEvolution ).

My experience of that day is similar to yours... there, stranded (and pregnant!), with people drinking away the horror of it all. I think it was the first time I really knew what HATE felt like.

I'm glad he's dead. But I know there are many others like him and the next one will rise up to make a name for himself. That's my worry - that bin Laden's death will open the chance for someone else who wishes to rise to this wicked glory. That saddens and scares me.

My Facebook status this morning: News on, explained to the kids the significance of what has occurred. My youngest's response was "19 days 'til my birthday!" This kind of childhood innocence is only possible when children are able to thrive in safety and security. Only then can their focus be on something as trivial as a birthday countdown. I wish all children of the world could count down the days to their birthday parties.

but this is one time I make an exception. This guy was all about killing and celebrating his killing, encouraging others on to do his dirty work, whilst he hid out in the hills. He would encourage others to strap on a bomb, but never do it himself.

For all those folks who lost loved ones, for all of us who watched in abject horror on 11 September, I'm happy he is dead.

and my heart goes out to families who lost loved ones in 9/11, I have mixed feelings about the mass celebrations in DC and Ground Zero. I can't help but worry that the images of crowds cheering like at a sporting event are going to fuel the fires of Al-Quaeda followers. Remember the concerns that if Bin Laden becomes held up as a martyr, it could incite the extremist movement?

The people of the US have a opportunity to take the high road here, let's take it.

"Tonight I learned something new about myself. I am happy Osama Bin Laden is dead. It was a human life, and yet I’m glad it’s over. I consider myself a pacifist and yet I felt patriotic and proud listening to my President outline how he gave the order to hunt Bin Laden down like a dog and kill him."

And your point about the smell. I didn't have to be down at Ground Zero (I was mid-town) to smell the smell. And somehow that smell is something that is still really strong in my memory.

My head is spinning. I'm so proud of our President. I'm so happy Bin Laden is dead. I'm so confused about being so happy.

And I just found and posted a letter I wrote to my Rabbi on September 11th, 2001:

http://the818.com/2011/05/ding-dong-2/

So, I'm crying and stuff. And I can't stop thinking about our boys.

I'm all hippie peacenik too. But I am happy we have his death behind us, and I take no pleasure in knowing we spent 10 years, almost, hunting this guy down.

I am glad it is over. My step daughter worked in NYC in a building that was evacuated a few blocks away from the WTC. My husband and little daughter were in the WTC a few weeks before the collapse.

I think we were all forever changed by the bombings. I ended up going to D.C. with my husband in 2002 because in Oct of 2001 NSF couldn't get people to sign up to come to Arlington and rotate through the foundation. My husband who had served in the military and as a scientist felt he had to serve his country however he could. We uprooted our daughter (in Jr. High then) and moved from Tucson to Arlington for a year.

I can't believe I'm happy at a death but my husband and I broke out a bottle of wine and are clinking glasses.

I did post a member post with the title Mission REALLY accomplished. :-)

Peace,

Nancy

As he walked away from the podium I remember that walk when he was speaking in Germany.

That was the guy I voted for and elected. I heard of playing the long game but damn.

Yes, I'm shaky about the next day and the day after. I can't celebrate the death of people.

Let's just say the actions of this man led to this outcome.
It was going to happen one way or another.

So unexpected. My thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost members and also those who currently have loved ones in harm's way. This has special meaning for those of us who live near Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, NC.

I am so overwhelmed with emotion right now. I remember watching the Today Show when this happened live and the immediate coverage and watching and still feeling the pain the survivors were going through after the WTC was attacked. And then hearing about the other planes. I am glad that it has been confirmed, but I hope that there will be no retaliation. I hope politics can stay out of this and people can keep their negative thoughts to the president and political affiliations out of this. Bin Laden is dead, I can't wait to hear what "our" President will have to say.

I'm all hippy anti-death. You know, don't believe in the death penalty. I'm a vegan, for goodness sake.

But.

I was in NYC on business on 9/11. And stranded there for days. And I smelled the air. And I sat in a bar with a bunch of guys who had been working down there and just listened to them.

I've never been so happy that someone is dead.

And there, I said it.

We haven't talked to our younger child (almost 5) about 9/11 specifically, but she was very concerned for the President's safety just now when we asked her to get to bed.
We told her that the news had "too much grown up only stuff right now" for her to watch, but explained that the President and his family were okay.
So far she knows that a very bad guy has been caught.
I'm just waiting for the questions tomorrow...

As the wife of an Army veteran, I am THRILLED at this and hopeful for the decline in this terrorist regime this could bring. At the same time, this will NOT be taken lightly by his followers and I'm still very worried for all of our troops that are still overseas. But overall I'm just really thankful for & proud of all the service men & women who've contributed to today, and just feel honored to be able to count so many of them as friends & family<3
