I had a long conversation with a friend the other day who is in a very tight spot. She lives across the country and I found myself wishing I could hop a plane and just go take care of her, giving her the space to work through the rough patch that has attacked her family. I wish I could be that person, the one who fixes it or holds space for healing, the person who can simply hold a hand and not have to worry about my own family needing me. But all I can do is listen from over two thousands miles away and try not to tell my beloved friends what to do while I wait and rock my own babies while thinking lovely thoughts for them.

I read this amazing post by Jen Lemen once, one of those posts that still sits with me and comes up in my heart when I need it.  An excerpt of what she writes (click on the quote for the full story):

Just when our paths are about to cross, the older man turns to me and say in all seriousness, "I'm telling you–there is no love left in this world."

"No, no, no!" I said. "That can't be true. Please don't say that."

"Do you know that moment," the younger guy says, explaining, "when you are at the bottom of everything and you have a little hope left, but you're not sure if it's going to last? You're not sure if there's really anything there at all?" I nod.

"That–" he says, pointing to the man's heart "is exactly where my friend's at right now."

The older man shrugs in agreement, laughs it off and turns to go to the store.

"Wait, wait a minute." I call back. "Come back. Come here. My whole day is going to be wrecked if we leave it like that."

I love that there is magic in the most unexpected places (click on the quote above to see how she created a moment of it for that man and his friend).  I love the idea that when you think it's all over a sweet little artist can cross your path and turn it around.

I want to be able to order magic: fill out a form for a friend, send it off (email would be nice) and have a moment of brilliance sweep in and change everything for the better.  If I had unlimited funds, THIS is what I'd do: create magic.  I'd have an army of people just like Jen across the world and people would send in their requests for magic and I'd forward them on to the appropriate person who would hop in the miracle machine (maybe a snazzy new hybrid car that runs on water?) and speed to an intercept point.  From there, magic would happen and the person who's heart was breaking or who believed that the world was just DONE for them would be surprised by the most amazing moment of simple compassion.  It would change the world.

Of course, isn't this the idea behind prayer?  I have always loved the idea of prayer, even if the religion it's attached to doesn't work for me.   And the more I learn about world religions the more I see that almost everyone has some form of prayer in their lives.  Call it intention, meditation, whatever, it's all the same concept.  Put it out in the world and hopefully, the right person will hear the message, even if it's simply to NOT allow someone to walk away without a fresh dose of hope.

So I'm putting it out there for my friend.  I'm sending out an order of magic.  I can only help that the right person is listening.

What kind of magic are you praying for these days?
