Organizing Your Closet - Keep it Cheap and Easy!

A few months ago, I did a massive reorganization of all the closets in our house, and I can't even begin to tell you how good it felt. Suddenly, if I wanted to find, say, ribbons, I actually knew where to look! Same thing goes for wrapping paper, out of season shoes, purses, gadgets, and more. But one closet stood out above the rest -- the closet I share with my husband, in which nearly all of my clothes live. The organization of that closet was reason enough to open a bottle of champagne, and, best of all, it was cheap and easy to do!

There are a few steps that pretty much every closet organization how-to guide will tell you to follow. First of all, you have to get rid of anything you haven't worn in a year. These will probably fall into four categories:

  • Items in good shape -- these should be given away or donated.
  • Items that need repairs -- make a promise to take these to a seamstress in the next month. Otherwise, get rid of them.
  • Items that you'll never part with -- perhaps it's a pair of pricey designer jeans you're hoping come back in style, or just a dress you love but don't fit into right now. Store these somewhere safe, but out of sight.
  • Unsalvageable items -- you shouldn't wear these, and nobody else should, either. Trash 'em.

I'm betting this will open up your closet considerably -- I know it did for me. After that, I organized by clothing type, and bought a few items to help me organize them. Sure, I wanted to get a whole new fancy system, but my budget barely stretched beyond Rubbermaid bins. So, I found something in between -- I picked up a few of these hanging organizers in different sizes. Now, my purses, shoes, sweaters, and jeans are neatly segregated. I keep the items I use more at the top for easy access.

Even though I was pretty ruthless in my cleaning, there were a few pieces I couldn't quite part with regardless of the fact that I don't remember the last time I wore them. These pieces I put on hangers, then hung them backwards -- that way, if I check next year and the hanger hasn't been turned around, I know I truly didn't wear the item and can safely toss it.

Putting my clothes away is so much easier these days, and I complain about not having anything to wear a lot less these days.

Do you have any creative closet organization tips of your own? Please share!

The Boy is going out of town, so I have the whole place to myself and I'm pulling out all the stops: I even created a flow chart detailing how all of my clothes/shoes/accessories will be sorted and organized. Hey, I never said I wasn't a control freak.

I'll post an update when (if?!) I finish getting everything together...

Getting rid of clothes you used to like, but no longer wear, is hard. I have to force myself to do it once a year or so. Knowing that I'll eventually get rid of stuff if I don't use it helps me avoid impulse purchases in the first place.

I dont have a dressing table - I'm not that kind of girl :D

No seriously - I have quite a fair amount of jewellery and other odds and ends - perfume bottles, lip balm - but have no space for a dressing table. I used to keep them in various bowls and boxes here and there, with the result that they just get mixed up in a mess, and I never wore anything anyway.

So I sacrificed one shelf in my cupboard. The shelves are about a foot wide and the same depth, fairly standard.

I put a lot of those sticky hooks on the sides for my necklaces and bangles.  I got one of those translucent plastic organisers that people use for storing small hardware components, and use that for all my broaches, rings, earrings and miscellaneous objects I've gathered. (Seal teeth? Shells? Bits of lavender? A silver harmonica?)

I even stuck a small LED torch in the back so I can see what I'm doing when I get dressed in the morning.
