The other odd family tradition

Growing up my family had one other odd Christmas tradition. I’m not sure where it came from but I know it was in place until my mom died in 1999. I think it originated with Mama (maternal grandmother) who was rather formal and reserved.

Looking at the photo above do you notice anything about me and my sister? Besides the 1973 clothing I mean.

We never opened our Christmas presents until after every one had eaten breakfast, the dishes were cleaned and put away, and everyone was completely dressed. Plus we had to wear nice church clothes.

This continued as we got older. By the time my sister and I were in high school presents were not opened until after lunch and every one in the extended family was there. The dress code had relaxed somewhat. I have photos somewhere of my sister and I wearing jeans or pants and casual tops opening presents. By then Christmas had officially moved to our house and Mama came to visit us.

It wasn’t necessarily a bad tradition. Just an odd one to most people. Try as I might I can not think of a time when we rushed to the tree and tore into our presents right away. I know we rushed to check out our gifts but no opening until Mom and Dad said so.

In retrospect, it made the day go much smoother and more balanced. It helped us focus on what was truly important, not the gifts themselves but our family we shared the day with.

Merry Christmas!

Hey there Ebeth! Count my parents in with yours. Cleaned up, dressed up and fed. Then, how about you? Was one present passed out at a time? I KNEW IT! Also, come to think of it, we were allowed to take down our stockings like sassymonkey and look at them before breakfast....once we were dressed. Thanks for the time warp, both of you! Enjoyed your post, Fondly, Robin

Yes presents were passed out one at a time by whoever was playing Santa. We couldn't open our gift until every person there had 1 gift to open up as well.

We were never allowed to just tear into the presents. We were allowed to open our stockings. Then once everyone was up and accounted for we opened presents.

do you carry on this tradition?

no. We let Charlie open his presents in his Christmas jammies. Then we eat breakfast and get dressed. There is just the 3 of us in the morning. Then my dad comes over for lunch and we give him his gifts. Sometimes my sister and her family show up for lunch or later in the day and somethimes they don't. We never really know with them.

texasebeth i wonder if they had you dress up for the pictures? jammies are what my kids did too. hubby and i rarely get dressed before noon on days off. but now i'm going to think about what i'm wearing for the photographs that will be taken!

That's the good part about being the one to take the photos. I'm not in any of them in my jammies with bedhead!
