To my observation, people--or women, in this case--cut their hair short, lots of times, because of 'pain' and/or big happiness.
One close example, my best friend cut her hair real short after she broke up with her boyfriend. She even changed her tomboy style into a feminine one.
And I did cut my hair short recently, not long after I quit my day job.
I wonder what's going on with us, women, and our hair, and our feelings. Don't you feel some kind of mystery in it?
My decision to cut my hair was as a kind of symbol of freedom or something, but I still can't really comprehend why it has to be represented by the hair.
Anyone willing to explain or shoot a perspective?

I think it's very potent as an external symbol of internal change.
how we wear our hair is a symbol to ourselves and to others - 'i am at work' 'this is a special occasion' 'i am a rebel' 'i believe in modesty'. these are all things we can say with our hair.
if you aren't offended by bad language, check out the song 'haircut' by australian band 'the waifs'. its a very funny, poignant break up song.
