The Palin Mistake

I had an interesting experience while volunteering for Barack Obama's campaign tonight.  The room was packed with women.  Dozens of women in one tiny little local office.  They were all there for the same reason I was: they were terrified of the idea of Sarah Palin as VP, or worse, as President of the United States of America.  Fear of Palin and her radical, anti-woman views had moblized the whole room of us.  One woman had brought her young son with her.  He ate his supper and colored with crayons while his mother called voters in New Hampshire.  I enjoyed the sort of warm-fuzzy feeling that comes from knowing that feminism is alive and well in the US.  Intelligent, concerned women won't be fooled.  Whether or not John McCain or the Republican base know it, we understand the myriad differences between Sarah Palin and ourselves.  We're looking out for ourselves, our children, our communities and our country.

What a feeling!

Yes - EMILY'S LIST - a wonderful organization supporting pro-choice Democratic female candidates!  Ladies, if you haven't joined/donated to them yet, go for it!

And the Couric interview...

Wow...

I was more impressed by Katie Couric than ever.  That she managed to keep a straight face and a professional demeanor as Palin embarassed herself with woefully unintelligent and uninformed answers was impressive.

I saw part of the Couric interview. I commend Katie for staying professional, asking questions in a way that allows Americans to see how Ms. Palin thinks on her feet. I don't think she'd be a very good PTA president, let alone the most powerful person on the planet. I was embarrassed, nauseated and felt a cold chill.

You would have hoped that she would have been better prepared. She obviously is in way over her head and "learning on the job" in this case, should something happen to McCain, puts all of us at jeopardy.

It's my child's life and all of our children's lives that will be in danger if she is elected VP. I think our enemies would love nothing better than to see McCain/Palin elected, because these 2 are predictably juvenile and simplistic in every single decision they've made.

As a mother, I will do everything in my power to help elect an intelligent, thoughtful leader who can grasp complexity and is not afraid to talk to the american people, leading by example.  Barack Obama is the change and the hope.

I actually thought the scarier part was when Couric asked Palin about the bail out, and why it's important. Palin answered with Health Care Reform to shore up our economy, before consulting notes in her lap and then added, "And jobs." and then babbled on about trade.

Incoherent. Absolutely incoherent.

The worst thing McCain did was isolate Palin. It put pressure on her with the few interviews, and didn't allow her to find her feet. However, these interviews do show that she's never paid attention to either national or international politics in her years in office. Her focus is on Alaska. That's really all she cares about. That's really all she knows.

You hit the nail on the head: Palin scares me not because she's that good, but because she's that bad.  We've had almost 8 years to see what recklessness and lack of understanding (or lack of desire to understand) of the issues can do to this country and the world.  It's not been pretty, and frankly, I think Sarah Palin makes W. look rational and contemplative.  Worse, should she end up as President of the United States of America, it won't be a matter of IF she'll screw things up, just a matter of when.  And when she does, what will be blamed?  Her gender.

If Sarah Palin becomes the model of a woman in the Oval Office, it will set all women back immeasurably.

This is Palin in an interview with Katie Couric on the economy and John McCain's record on deregulation.

Warning:  Palin's lack of understanding of the issues and the mechanics of what is happening is pretty horrifying.  But kind of riveting, like watching a car accident.

Palin & Katie Couric ( http://wonkette.com/403007/403007 )

COURIC: You've said, quote, "John McCain will reform the way Wall Street does business." Other than supporting stricter regulations of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac two years ago, can you give us any more example of his leading the charge for more oversight?

PALIN: I think that the example that you just cited, with his warnings two years ago about Fannie and Freddie--that, that's paramount. That's more than a heck of a lot of other senators and representatives did for us.

COURIC: But he's been in Congress for 26 years. He's been chairman of the powerful Commerce Committee. And he has almost always sided with less regulation, not more.

PALIN: He's also known as the maverick though. Taking shots from his own party, and certainly taking shots from the other party. Trying to get people to understand what he's been talking about--the need to reform government.

COURIC: I'm just going to ask you one more time, not to belabor the point. Specific examples in his 26 years of pushing for more regulation?

PALIN: I'll try to find you some and I'll bring them to you.

I'm with you, KDQ.  That this person is even this close to the Executive Branch of government is puzzling and, frankly, scary.  I know that the word "fear" is getting tossed around quite a bit, as in Palin supporters calling out to Dems, "Ah ha!  She's scares you!  Hee hee."  But I don't think they really get it.  She scares me not because she's that GOOD.  She scares me because she is so clearly THAT BAD.  And by "bad", I mean inexperienced, reckless and without substance.  She could be a "good" person, but a terrible, terrible Vice President.
