Living in a rental property presents some challenges for the tenants. Me being on the tenant side of things, I have mastered the skill of beneficial persuasion from the tenant to landlord communication.
The biggest and best tip I can ever give to those forced to, or voluntarily, in the rental position is that it never, ever, ever hurts to ask. The worst you can get is a "No." Which is not all that life-shattering if you really think about it.
Having moved into our current rental at the beginning of January, we're loving having a space for our little guy to run around outside in the backyard. (Hooray! We finally have a backyard!) However, and this is a big however, the back yard is by no means landscaped, unless you count the odd hole in the back left corner, and has rock. Bleck!
Now, having been raised in the desert, I dream of lush green grass yards and tall oak trees. I'm pretty much spent on the whole "desert landscape" that is all around me. If I want to see rocks and dirt and cacti, I'll walk 12 feet to my neighbors front yard. The only plus side to having rocks is that the yard maintenance is minimal if not non-existent.
So...I sent an email to our landlord. "Would you be at all opposed to us laying sod in the backyard?" That's it. No lengthy (and if you know me, you know my love affair with lengthy), explanation to "fight" my case about why it would be beneficial for eventual resale or tenants to follow, although I was prepared for that, just a simple sentence. A sentence to which the response was, "Absolutely!" That's right folks, I even was the proud recipient of an exclamation point.
That brings us to our current position: sod prep.
I have a friend who *perhaps* I used to make out with hard core before I met Husfriend that is a lawn and garden genius. No lie. He's breathtakingly attractive, has a modeling agent, does runway, rocks at his college education, and works in the garden center at Lowe's. The GARDEN CENTER at LOWE'S. Why? Because he loves it, not to mention is damn good at growing stuff.
Anyway, where was I before I drifted off into fantasyland about an ex and his amazing accomplishments post me? Right. Sod prep expert.
He's going to hook us up with everything we need and need to know about preparing the soil for the sod.
He is working tonight so we may pop into his store when Husfriend gets home from work.
Then again, I haven't showered (and don't plan on it until bedtime) today...
