Patterns and Texture: The Key to Chic Fall Outfits
By practically stylish on October 24, 2013
Fall is the season of cute and cozy fabrics. Once the heart of winter hits, my desire for warmth greatly diminishes my desire to look chic, but these perfectly crisp October days are still all about style. My favorite way to embrace fall is by mixing patterns and textures to create outfits with depth and character. Of course, this is easier said than done.
If you are looking for interesting pieces that are easy to coordinate, start with a solid colored lace skirt and something tweed. I usually gravitate towards tweed skirts and blazers, but a tweed pant or dress accomplishes the same thing. Lace and tweed both have subtle texture and visual interest, but are not necessarily going to be the focal point of your outfit.
The key is to bring cohesion to your ensemble, often through a repeated color, and to ensure that your patterns are not competing. For example, I paired a burgundy lace pencil skirt with a black and white herringbone peplum top. Since neither piece yelled, "Look at me!" I had the chance to choose what I wanted the focus to be. In this case, I accentuated the peplum detail at the waist with a burgundy patent belt and, since I have lots of burgundy in my closet, I added on a matching bracelet to carry on the color story.
For an effortless work appropriate look, pair a tweed pencil skirt with a printed sweater (I'm partial to polka dots and florals). Generally these combinations look best when the patterns or textures are dissimilar. For example, mixing non-matching tweeds will look like you were trying unsuccessfully to put together a matching suit. Pieces that are obviously different make your choices look more deliberate.
If you find that you are often wearing only neutrals, texture is an easy way to spice things up without requiring you to leave your color comfort zone. Many women fall into the trap of wearing head-to-toe black because of its supposed slimming effects, but that also means your clothing can look flat. Add dimension to your wardrobe with a touch of texture, after all that is what fall fabrics are all about!
