Paula Deen's Got "The Sugah Diabeetus"

Approximately 10 a.m. CST I logged in to Twitter on my laptop. I rarely check "trending" because I Tweet to connect with my local Okie, business, industry, agricultural and blogging contacts.

I was frowning because a local Tweet voice was at the same time feigning sympathy for a young girl who had wrecked her car, while posting a photo of her misfortune.

"If you really felt sorry for her, you'd respect her privacy dude." I was preaching to my PC screen.

Then I saw it. Someone connected to me had retweeted this message put out by The Daily

Exclusive: @Paula_Deen, queen of Southern cooking, to reveal she has diabetes

I glanced over to "trending" and saw that "Paula Deen" was number one.

"What?" I did a mental double-take while considering the information.  I was still sorting through the news when I clicked on the trending link.  And then I wanted to throw up.  Here's a sample of the truly low messages flying through Twitter-space today:

PaulaDeen to announce she has diabetes. She found out with a simple blood test. Dr pricked her finger, butterscotch oozed out.

I hope PaulaDeen starts deep frying things in insulin.

When she heard she had diabetes, PaulaDeen asked, "Does that come with a side of marshmallow and butter?"

Okay, that's enough.  No, it's probably too much. There is so much cruelty on Twitter right now regarding this topic I caught myself scooting over into the back corner of my chair, as if withdrawing a bit would help these messages go away.

Based upon reviewing a few reports, it appears that not only is Paula Deen announcing that she has Type II diabetes, but she has cut a deal to become the spokesperson for a diabetes drug called Novartis.

I also noticed several Tweets sharing Paula Deen recipes involving chili, cream cheese and cheese dip.  And another few having to do with dipping "pigs in the blanket" into something.  These were genuine, information sharing tweets that stood as silent witnesses to the world of sarcasm, diabetes and irony whirling around them.

More irony?  This one is close to home.  "Oklahoma City announces it's lost one-million pounds."  Residents of Oklahoma's largest city just sent out the word that they have collectively now logged a one-million pound weight loss...and they're really excited about it.  Mayor Mick Cornett led the campaign; he's almost giddy about it.  And he should be.

So, I'm sitting here thinking...can Paula Deen somehow raise awareness to our growing U.S. diabetes problem?  Will she "take back" some of her heavily-weighted recipes?  It appears that some have already started down that path.  Another Tweet...this time from The Food Network:

Learn how to lighten up @Paula_Deen's recipes, y'all! Her son @BobbyDeen shows you how: .

Somehow, I feel extremely "weighted down" with all this information today.  How about you?  If you'd like to shed some of your thinking weight, let me know what you think about all this...and how, if at all, it affects you.
 ***
Author's note ~ "The Sugah Diabeetus" is a compendium of descriptive phrases I took from the Twitter feed about which I wrote.  It is not my endorsement of that phrase, but rather a commentary on the hurtful comments made when troublesome situations happen in the life of a celebrity.

As much as I love Twitter, it's a place where anyone's misfortune is fair game for jokes, and Paula is a super easy target because of her over-the-top approach to high-fat and sugar cooking. I've never been a fan myself, but I'd be interested in knowing if people who made fun of her diagnosis have ever sung the praises of bacon and sticks of butter, though. It's very easy to sit in judgment of people who are not us. I'm guilty of occasionally snarking on a celebrity, but I consider illness off-limits.

I do think Paula is a tough cookie and is well capable of responding to criticism. I'm also not surprised about the drug sponsorship or new approaches to her show and recipes. I know nothing about her personal motivations or beliefs, but you don't build a bajillion dollar brand like hers without that kind of savvy.

It is true that the diet choices she's made and has espoused in her work can contribute to this type of diabetes. I've seen it in my family and in my work, but its not like I was going to mock my godfather or grandfather, who both died too young with this disease as a contributing factor. I'm currently being treated for stage two hypertension, and I'm well aware that some of my choices haven't helped that situation either, but it's not always easy to see consequences before they happen.

I also feel for Type 1 folks so much, have seen friends struggle mightily with it, and think it's a shame anyone judges others for this at all. I think people in general, myself included, would do well to be kinder and less judgmental. I don't see the alternative helping anyone.

That had paragraphs when I typed it, I swear. Oops.

Hello there, Red Dirt Kelly! Thank you for the information in this post, also the great way it is written. I couldn't wait to read the next sentence throughout. As many of us have been discussing under the book SassyMonkey reviewed, Why Women need Fat, bad fats, low-fat, soda and drugs account for much obesity, not high fat, egg, mayo diets like Paula Deen's. If Paula isn't eating organic, grass fed fats and other good fats like coconut oil, than that could be a problem.

KarenLynn is definitely on the right track inquiring about statin drugs, which I would research immediately before taking another pill:

http://www.westonaprice.org/cardiovascular-disease...

BTW, I was able to balance out my body and use cinnamon to cure my blood sugar problems:

I am interested that Paula's restaurant, cooking on a commercial level, did not produce a tasty, rewarding product as I had always wanted to eat there, as well. Thanks for that information, KarenLynn. No need to detour on the road trip, eh?

Fondly, Robin

SunbonnetSmart.com I loved reading your thoughtful tracking; your take on the situation. And, how cool that you were able to cure your own blood sugar problems...amazing. I have a friend who has recently lost ONE HUNDRED pounds, and is no longer taking medicine for diabetes. It's so cool to watch. My father "weaned" himself off blood pressure medicine. Such victorious stories out there of people changing their lives and their health...and such courageous stories of people who can't but choose to live a full life regardless.

do you think maybe she is one of the 50% of women on statin drugs who are being diagnosed with diabetes? which scares me to death because it take zocor for high cholesterol. i also think we need to adjust how we respond when someone gets bad medical news. i feel bad for saying this, but i look forward to her new more healthy recipes she'll be writing and cooking. is that wrong?

Red Dirt Kelly 93 pts

KarenLynnn Those are good questions. It seems like given her resources, she would have a fairly high level of care who would consider those options. Several of the news stories had information re: upcoming disclosure interviews from her. They may have a chance to bring up those types of questions during that time. In terms of the response, I was thinking that the whole time I was reading the twitter feed, and even questioned whether or not I should be writing about the questions or actions related to the announcement. I'm still not sure I'm solid on that answer, but "felt" like writing it, so I did. I agree about the recipes. I use her crab cake recipe a couple of times each year and cut the oil/mayonnaise dramatically. It's still delicious.

Red Dirt Kelly i do the same with most every one's recipes. skinny them down. when we were in savannah last year we ate at her restaurant (just so we could say we did). i wasn't impressed with anything i ate there, all the food could have been less salty, less greasy, etc. i hope she brings more awareness to diet and diabetes.

Not knocking on her cooking style. Or her diabetes. I happen to cook with butter and margarine is spit on in my house. Nobody here in my house is overweight, has high cholesterol or diabetes or any other such health issues. Of course, I don't fry foods except once in a while. It's more than your diet. It's the quantity of your food and how much you exercise and drink water vs other drinks *cough* soda. And a little bit genetics. At least, for "the sugah diabeetus", as the author calls it.

I'm sure Paula does not eat like she cooks on her show every single day. She is sharing a deep rooted tradition of southern cooking and we can choose to like it or not. People can be relentlessly cruel. The high road would be to support her as a successful determined business women which takes confidence, courage and a fearless focus and now she can start the next chapter. Amen to Paula Deen!

Carla and at Leighann ~ I'm wondering if I need to clarify through and end note in the post? The "Sugah Diabeetus" phrase is a compendium of descriptors I also found on that Twitter feed about which I wrote. That phrase was meant to highlight the very painful comments made about this topic

I look forward to a lower calorie cookbook, I never made any of her receipes before because of the calories, much luck to her and her family.

(Sorry for the triple commenting) I have to confess, I commented before reading the blog post - I see the new show is mentioned there as well :)

I am not surprised - not because of her recipes and the pious "shame on her" approach, but more rather because both she and her husband have lost a ton of weight, and usually when someone older does a big lifestyle change like that it is because of some impending medical concern. I think her husband Michael lost like 50 or 60 lbs, I think she has lost like 40 lbs. nobody is talking about that in the media, but it is clear from the pictures. I totally saw it and thought that either she or her husband was going to come out with a cookbook titled "I lost 50 lbs eating Paula Deen cooking." she is an ULTRA savvy businesswoman. I am very sorry to heat that she has diabetes, but I think she was warned at least a year ago and lost weight to try to prevent it. My hope is that America will benefit because she will use that fantastic mind to develop some über-yummy recipes that are also über-healthy and transform her image and her brand from indulgence to healthy eating. Let's hope...

Leighann - I never thought about it that way before, but I can somewhat identify. My father was a non-smoker who died from lung cancer - there's a similar stigma/assumption that most lung cancer victims brought it upon themselves (by smoking).

*hugs* to you for being a strong mom and advocate for your daughter. <3

I read that her son just started hosting a show called "not my mother's recipes" (or similar) where he shows how to cook healthier versions of her recipes.

I think they said the show is about a month old ...

I think the Nat'l Enquirer leak pushed her to "come out" sooner than intended, but my guess is Paula has been extremely calculating in planning how this whole thing plays out.

On one hand I feel compassion for her, on the other hand I think continuing to promote foods that she likely stopped eating a few months ago shows a lack of integrity.

I'm more critical of people who say "The Sugah Diabeetus" than people who are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. My child has type 1 diabetes, which has no known cause and no cure, and people flinging around stereotypes such as that phrase do a great disservice to those of us trying to educate and advocate. While type 2 diabetes can sometimes be controlled by a change in diet and exercise, poor diet and lack of exercise aren't always the cause. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that can in no way be prevented. Since the two types are often lumped together, my daughter faces a lifetime of biased and unfounded stereotypes.

Personally I think it's sad how cruel people can be!! I see people every week who are dealing with the cruel effects of diabetes, and I wish Paula all the best!

No Lynette not typical. I am from down south and trust me her diet is not typical!

I could have sworn that she said she was diabetic months ago. Deep-fried butter will do that to you.

I think she represents a 'typical' Southern diet. For the same reasons that area of the US has the highest obesity rate and diabetes.

"Sugah" diabetes is NOT caused from SUGAH...anyone who is educated in it knows that. I have diabetes...its caused by the pancreas inability to send enough insulin to breakdown carbs. Not a laughing matter.
