Last night I was up late blogging and surfing-as usual-and I caught an interesting story on ABC’s Nightline. The did a featue on a Mommy Blogger named Heather Armstrong from Utah. She is actually making $40,000 per month from advertising on her blog http://dooce.com/ ! Her husband even quit his job to help her run her site. I have a goal about what I would like to make online to help around here. Between ebay, my blog and articles online I would like to make $3000 to cover our mortgage payment. Now, I just started so I know that I have work t
o do but can you actually make a living from your blog?
I know that there are moms out there that do make quite a bit from advertising on their blog. Both Trish Berg from http://simplifyingmotherhood.blogspot.com/ and Dawn from http://mom2my6pack.blogspot.com/ I found by watching Dateline about Mommy bloggers. (They are both on my blogroll, you should check them out!) Dawn was said to make $4000 each month from her advertising space. All this from speaking her mind in her unique and entertaining way each night about the craziness that goes on in her house!
What exactly does it take to have a blog so popular that it can help pay your bills? Here I am checking my stats each night and getting excited when it hits double didgets. Do you have to be racy and controversial like Heather or offbeat and selfdepricating like Dawn? The last thing that I need is to try to sound or be like anyone else. I want to write quality content and develop my voice. But how do I get the people to come and check me out and hopefully get hooked?
Any of you mommy bloggers out there got any ideas to get me jumpstarted in building an audience? How about some stories about how you are getting some income from your blog? I love to hear!

How to build an audience
You build an audience by networking with others and by creating or working to foster a community.
Then, you write and write and write and work on improving your writing skills, find your writing voice and then you write some more.
The most financially successful bloggers I know did not become successful overnight. Heather has been writing her blog for years and she's not the only one - these woman who are bringing in a lot of money have worked hard - for years. This doesn't happen overnight.
You start out by making a few bucks with advertising, you get a gig or two blogging for someone else, you build your personal blog brand/audience by becoming part of a community of bloggers. And years later and lots of work later....
Easy, right? ;-)
Anyone else have thoughts on how to pay your mortgage with your blog?

Making a living from my blog
Making a living from my blog has not been a goal of mine, but I, too, get excited when my hits are up. Who wouldn't? I always thought the reason my blog(s) never took off in a big way was my writing skills, but now I know my networking skills are more to blame. Heather Armstrong puts so much effort into her blog that there's no doubt it is her job. I don't think I could ever have that much dedication.
