The thing about being a Mother of the Bride who lives a couple of thousand miles away from the Bride to Be and the location of the upcoming wedding is that it causes you to spend a lot of time on the telephone. I hate the telephone (but love my iPhone.) Being a couple of thousand miles away also means that you spend a lot of time on the internet. I love the internet. Being a couple of thousand miles away also means you have to be willing to interupt your mother's surprise 65th birthday party weekend for a trip to David's Bridal.

Jenn has been completely absorbed in this whole wedding thing since the minute she said "yes". It's like she thinks of nothing but this wedding and it can make telephone conversations with her just a wee bit stressful.

When she called me a few months ago to suggest that we all go wedding dress shopping while we are in Charlotte for my mom's birthday party, I almost spewed my coffee on the monitor. But, the mom in me kicked the daughter in me and I told her that it was a brilliant idea and we'd do it.

She started rambling about her recent trip to David's Bridal where she decided on her colors (Me: "no pink? what do you mean no pink? you love pink! you've always loved pink! your name should BE Pink! I cannot believe you didn't choose pink!) and she picked out the styles for her bridesmaids/maid of honor but she had not tried on ANY wedding dresses. Because... she was waiting until I could be there. (Me: "sniff, sniff")

I clicked over to David's Bridal and looked at the dresses she'd chosen for her girls. (Me and TW: "Michelle in a strapless? ummm are you sure? What about that one instead? It's a "Breakfast at Tiffany's" Audrey Hepburn type of dress, she'll like it better and it will look better. " Jenn: "Sure, that was my second choice for her." Me and TW: "Thank goodness.")

Then, I logged into her account to look at the wedding dresses she was considering... aye yi yi. Look at all of that white, all of that shiny, all of that... wait... that one has pink embroidery! (Me: "I like that fourth one but the second one has pink embroidery... it's you..." Jenn: "I know, it's pink but... I'm not sure." Me: "It's pink. It's you. But that gathered bodice dress would look amazing on you. But the pink..." Jenn: "I don't like that bunched up thing, I'm taking it off the list and hush about the pink." Me: "No, don't! It will look fantastic." Jenn: "OK fine, I'll try it.")

Flash forward a month as we all ditch my mother and head to David's Bridal in Charlotte (and when I say "we all" I mean .... my daughter is resourceful... not only did she have me, TW and Michelle with her, she also conned her other two girls into driving into Charlotte to crash my mom's birthday party and come for the wedding dress event! Steph drove down from Virginia and Brittney drove up from Charleston.)

We had an appointment and the woman who helped us was very nice, though a wee bit confused by us since the word "patriarchy" was uttered numerous times during our visit...

They didn't have all of the dresses that Jenn had dropped into her "favorites" in stock but they had a couple ... including the one with the pink embroidery.

We wandered around the store. We told Brides to Be that they looked fantastic in various dresses that they were trying on. We commiserated with other Mothers of the Bride. We tried to bring home a couple of Flower Girls who were just about as cute as a Flower Girl can be.

And then Jenn started trying on dresses which means she also started crying.

She loved the first dress and the tears started before she even got out of the dressing room. She didn't love some of the veils and tiara thingies that were suggested but she loved the dress. She loved it so much she thought it was the one and didn't want to try anymore on. Hah. Thank goodness

I work with brides all the time, and very few pick out their wedding dress that fast!  Your daughter saved you from having to help her do a whole lot of searching and running around!

I spent some time as a bridal sales consultant at a large local bridal salon. It's so funny how many brides try on dozens of dresses only to come back to the first dress they tried on!

That is a stunning dress!  I also picked out my wedding dress during my first visit and because it was a floor sample, I got it at half price.  My daughter is actually going to use the dress tonight for an anti-drug video that I'm taping for her school project!

I don't suppose you're willing to show us which dress you picked... I'd love a peek. When is your wedding? :-)

That happened to me that way. I recently got engaged. Looked at dresses online at David's Bridal. Went to try them on for the first time? I ended up buying the second dress I tried on. :) The 3rd, 4th, and 5th dresses? SUCKED compared to dress #2. :)

Well Denise, what can I say.

When the story continues like this I might get over the mother of the bride phobia myself.

Wonderful daughters, wonderful dress BTW.

Cannot wait to see what you are wearing!?
