Periods, Puberty and Products - Always!
By elaineR.N. on November 15, 2012
As anyone who has ever read my bio knows, I am a registered nurse, a women’s health expert and am part of the beinggirl.com’s expert team. As a member of the expert team, I personally respond to hundreds of questions and concerns a month from teens, young adults and some women about their menstrual and reproductive health.
BeingGirl.com is the Tampax and Always sponsored site for teen girls wanting to know more about puberty, periods and products. Along with that, there is fun stuff about beauty, style and entertainment and serious topics that address relationships and life. Many years before, when employed by Procter & Gamble, I am proud to say that I was part of the team that launched this wonderful site. While it has evolved greatly since we first introduced it over 12 years ago, it still remains a popular site where teens today can find everything from how to insert a tampon to how to flirt with your crush.
Please be clear, while I am a nurse and have the professional obligation to provide factual information in an unbiased manner, I love the association with Tampax and Always. I see the brands as more then product offerings, as I respect them as the experts on puberty, periods and products. After all, they have both been successful brands for decades because they understand periods and what women want in menstrual protection products. However (and this to me is a very important however) I believe that everyone should choose the products they use based on trust and what they feel comfortable using. As for me personally, I love talking women’s health. I enjoy researching the most current findings and totally feel fulfilled when I can share the results and help someone improve their life. So no matter what anyone uses, I am personally committed to ensuring women have the most medically factual and scientifically accurate information to make their decisions.
While I began this post with the mention of beinggirl.com, I really want to talk about the Always site because it has just been refreshed with new content. http://www.always.com/en-us/home.aspx
Many of the questions I get from teens have to do with helping them find the most comfortable (and discreet) product for them or what pad should they use when playing sports or taking dance. Teens also ask questions about when to change their pad or how to feel fresh when on their period. Women may ask about their changing protection needs due to a heavier flow during perimenopause. Also, a woman recently asked me if she should see her doctor because she started spotting between periods. I said YES!
The new Always site content addresses many of the questions I get and allows women to have their answers immediately rather than waiting for a response. Of course, I, along with the other experts, are there to address any and all questions by email, along with follow up requests for information or to just confirm what someone may already know – kind of like a second opinion from someone you trust.
The home page of the Always site offers a thorough, easy to use way to help with the pad selection process. However, the part of the site that has motivated me to talk about it is the ‘Your Lifestage’ area. LOVE IT! There are 5 Stages to select from: Teens, Every Woman, Pregnancy, Mothers and Daughters and Fulfilled & Experienced (who wouldn’t like being categorized as fulfilled and experienced!). Within each section is content relevant to that stage. The selection of what to include is, no doubt, based on talking to teens, women and health care professionals who advise on what information would be most important to include in that particular lifestage section. I think they did a great job!
I invite you to visit and look around. Let me know what you think.
