Picking Up What Juno Missed: MTV's True Life Adoption Episode

Watching Juno was sort of like eating potato chips in lieu of lunch. It started out enjoyable enough, but I felt unsatisfied and ragged by the time I left the theater. Almost as if I had been served a meal with no nutrition. I have higher hopes for the MTV True Life documentary airing this Saturday (March 21st). I have a feeling they'll show a more nuanced view of adoption in half the time, paying more attention to the emotions inherent in the experience rather than how many new slang terms can be used in a single scene.

It's just the difference between fiction and...well...True Life.

MTV has been working on this documentary for almost a year. The show will follow several expectant parents, all considering creating adoption plans for their respective children. The expectant parents were given no compensation--only the opportunity to tell their story and educate the "just adopt" general public on the reality of adoption. Regardless on how you felt about the realism of Juno, this documentary aims to show what Juno definitely glossed over; namely, the aftermath.

This documentary could serve as a great jumping off point to the world of domestic adoption blogs--featuring all members of the triad (adoptive parents, adoptees, and birth parents). I tend to read the adoptive parent blogs since they are the ones that appear on my blogroll.

Production, Not Reproduction has recently started an open adoption blogroll with the aim of containing a multitude of perspectives in the triad.

Weebles Wobblog is a fantastic writer and adoptive mum. She recently had a very eye-opening series on her daughter's reunion with her birth father.

Life from Here recently matched with an expectant mother and she is currently navigating the pre-adoption relationship with grace and insight.

Today's the Day is an adoptive mum and an adoptee, bringing both perspectives to her blog posts.

Chronicles of Munchkin Land is written by a birth mother and fellow BlogHer.

Which blogs do you read (or write) on domestic adoption?

I would love to watch this MTV adoption documentary together; meaning, if enough people (for instance, at least 10) are interested, I will turn next Thursday's post into an open discussion (complete with thought questions to jump start the conversation) on the episode. You don't need to be a member of the triad or a blogger; just someone willing to watch the episode and dive into the conversation with an open mind. If you're interested in watching the episode and participating in the discussion next week, leave a comment below.

Melissa is the author of the infertility and pregnancy loss blog, Stirrup Queens and Sperm Palace Jesters. She keeps a categorized blogroll of 1700 infertility blogs and writes the daily Lost and Found and Connections Abound, a news source for the infertility blogosphere. Her infertility book, Navigating the Land of If, is forthcoming from Seal Press in June 2009. She is the keeper of the IComLeavWe (International Comment Leaving Week) list which is currently open for March.

All of the past episodes are uploaded on the MTV website now.  As far as I know, only one episode deals with an adoption (the season finale, Caitlynn's story), but the information about the moms dealing with teenage pregnancy and parenthood is good as well.  We have two adopted sons, both adopted through the foster care system here in the US.  I also help with a Teen Pregnancy Support Group through our church's MOPS program. These girls need support, no matter what their final decision is.

I'd love to hear more about thoughts on the program.  I just started TiVoing the follow-up series Teen Mom.

Great job on the article Melissa...

Couldn't find it - and it's not available to view outside of the US according to the MTV website.  Not happy.

I watched it and am totally interested in joining the discussion.

I'm in the process of adopting domestically and I hope fully open and ethical.

I adopted my son doing a domestic adoption. We are not in contact with our son's birthmother, for very complicated reasons.  Although, we did share all identifying information. I imagine at some point we will be in contact again. I am in contact with her son's biological aunt, and his birthmother's sister. Anyway, I would love to participate in this. I'm looking forward to this documentary.

Peace,

I have MTV, so I'll try to find the program!  Actually, since most women who choose adoption are in their mid 20's - 30s, I wouldn't mind seeing a doc on that.

I'm hoping this show attempts to provide a sensitive and realistic portrayal of teen pregnancy and adoption.  Is that too much to ask?

Definitely interested in the discussion afterwards.  Anyone else?!

I don't get MTV, so I'll have to see if I can find someone who *GASP* still has a VCR and a blank tape (do they still sell them now that everyone has a DVR?) and see if I can watch it.

Thanks for the heads up on this, Mel.

I'm cable-ly challenged, so I'll have to buddy up with someone who gets MTV.  I'll ask my sister to do whatever cable-ly people do to capture the show.

And unless the lead character likes Sunny D, I bet you're right that reel life and True Life may not have much in common.

Eager for the discussion. I would love it if all parts of the adoption triad/plane are in on it. I'll post a heads-up on my blog.

although I tend to yell at the kids i see on those True Life documentaries. It's not fair I know-- everyone makes bad choices when we're young and idiotic. God knows I wouldn't want my mistakes immortalized on film.
