I've been blogging for almost a month, and during that time I have done quite a bit of research on the components of a successful blog.  Along the way I stubled across a new trend that's swept the blogosphere - "Follow me and I'll follow you."

Now in the interest of building a successful blog I'ms ure it would be much easier to just jump on the bandwagon and follow a million other bloggers and their less than average quality blogs, but that doens't sit well with me.  If soemone does follow my blog i want ti to be because they truly enjoy my content.  And how would I know if I'm actually doing a good job if people were only following me because I followed them??

Needless to say I refuse to follow someone's blog, or subscribe to their blog just so they will return the favor.  Nor do I like to follow blogs built on a foundation of give-aways.  I follow/subcribe to 5 blogs.  That's it.  Every day I read a few, leave comments and when asked I giev my honest advice.  And I'm sure I've read close to a hundsred by now if not more.  But only 5 have struck my fancy so much so that I just couldn't bare the idea of missing a post, and so I subscribed.

I don't know if this is a good strategy for me in the long run.  I'm not sure if even my blog can stand that kind of scrutiny.  But I refuse to fill up my google homepage with a whole bunch of blogs that I won't read.

I don't even follow people on Twitter "just because".  I'm not trying to start some sort of revolution here.  Just wondering if anyone else has rejected the concept of "follow for follow"?  Or else what would motivate us to continure cranking out quality material, right??

I try to avoind "Friend Collectors" as I call them.  They are on Facebook, Twitter, and yes, the blogosphere.  I don't use any sort of RSS Feeder because I only read a few blogs.  I have a very small audience for my blogs and I'm totally ok with that.  I'm not trying to run a business or anything, I'm just writing for the hell of it and to try to get a few laughs out of my readers.

You are SO not alone and I'm glad that I saw this because I sort of thought that I was the only person not interested in "collecting" people.  Thanks!

I also do not always follow them, unless their blogs have really good information

I don't automatically follow on Twitter, and did start off recipricating every blog follow. I soon realized that it made no sense to follow and not read, so I trimmed my reader down to 15 blog that I get to every week. I will still visit those who comment, but don't usually follow as closely.

Exactly exactly right. I will not follow just to get my numbers up. Sincere followers only. Here, here.

And Facebook I refuse to accept people as friends, that were never my friends, or if I see up the road do not even say "hello"

I am not that hard up for numbers

Quality, sincerity and genuine followers only.

Having said that - I do not ask you to follow me - but do ask you to have a look through my very new blog and ask for comments - I will leave the following up to your own good taste :)

Indeed if someone unfollows you then they were not really fans.  While I have not gotten any hateful messages I have had serval peoepl unfollow me on Twitter undoubtedly because I was not following them as well.

I also do not follow someone on twitter or their blog feed just because they follow mine.  When I first started I had a few people actually send hateful messages about why they were unfollowing me - it was always something about me not following them to raise their numbers.

People who would unfollow just because I don't follow them are not real readers.  I feel that they followed me in an effort to raise their own numbers and not the content of my posts.
