(PICS) BlogHers Walk the Runway

BlogHer Original Post

BlogHer '12 rocked the fashion. Like, literally. With a runway and everything, thanks to lead sponsors 6PM and PetSmart. Want to see pictures?

With BlogHer Editor-at-Large Kathryn Finney of The Budget Fashionista at the helm, 21 bloggers had their hair, make-up and style professionally done thanks to 6PM, Elizabeth Arden, Paul Mitchell and PetSmart. (Yes, dogs accompanied some of these ladies. In costume, natch.) Do you recognize these bloggers? For video, click here.

To say the fashion show was a good experience for me is a huge understatement -- it was amazing. While it was definitely a challenge for me to come out of my comfort zone in so many ways, it was always reassuring to see beside me a group of women who were doing exactly the same -- working hard to feel comfortable in our own skin. It's hard sometimes, but this is precisely why we needed to do this. We are women of social influence who can now turn to our readers and say, "You can do this, too!"

Walking down the runway with a diverse group of women, I knew that everyone in the audience saw someone who represented them in some way. When I saw the Plus Size Princesses cheering and clapping, I knew I was there for them and I hope that in some way, my presence let them know that we're all beautiful!

And suddenly we are in elevators and behind curtains and DJ cranks the music and it’s Go Time and there are cheers and I feel saucy and sassy and aware of every curve as I walk with hips swinging in leather booties that probably cost more than my first car and it’s liberating and wonderful and OH MY GAWD WHY CAN’T WE ALL FEEL LIKE THIS EVERY DAY because it feels so good to just be happy and in the moment for once. No time to doubt. Too bright to hide.

The fashion show was simply amazing for me. Going into it, I was self-conscious about how I'd look up there, as I've never considered myself fashionable or beautiful, even after losing 80+ pounds. Who could have predicted that a transformation with skilled make-up and hair artists, a fantastic outfit, and a walk down a runway in front of hundreds of women could help me find my inner beauty and bring it out for all to see? I left that show with a new appreciation for myself and an enormous boost to my self-esteem. It was a life-changing moment.

I have a difficult time "owning it." People seem to think I have a natural confidence, but it's for show. So to be out there on that stage in front of all of those people and outside of my comfort zone was, in the words of Joe Biden, a big f*cking deal. But I did it, and I survived and I'm better for it. I owned it. And it was good.

When the universe hits you over the head with hot pink jeans (part of the other ensemble I was fitted for) and a sheer orange beaded dress, you quickly learn to say “yes.” Yes to being bold. Yes to being fearless. Yes to being in the moment. And I learned that when you say yes, you have one of the most amazing, transformative, joy-filled experiences of your life. I am so happy that I got to be a part of this event and that the love and genius we experienced overflowed straight into the audience.

I’ve seen a lot of fashion shows in my time, but not until this weekend did I ever get to be in one. As part of the Blogher 2012 conference, more than a dozen bloggers walked in a show outfitted by online retailer 6pm. I was somewhat terrified of having a Carrie moment on the runway and have a newfound appreciation for professional models. Fortunately I made it through without falling, even on 6-inch Jessica Simpson platform stilettos.

I was especially grateful to Kathryn, Darlene and Sarissa for taking such great care of me, and of course the ground crew for all the pinning, hemming and cheering they did. My favorite part of the show was the sense of familiarity between everyone. Where else in the world can you attend a fashion show where the excitement for the looks is overshadowed by the excitement for the quality of person coming down that runway? What a fun even to be a part of!

The preparation for the show was actually meditative for me! When I’m at home trying to get ready, I usually have a toddler pulling on my leg and ransacking my make-up drawer (I don’t even want to think about where she’s been putting my make-up brushes ... ). So during hair and make-up, I sat back, relaxed, and soaked it all in. At the show itself, I was moved to tears by the incredible display of confidence and fierceness by such a wonderfully diverse and charismatic group of women. It was an incredible honor to be part of this inaugural show!

But when BlogHer asked me to walk the runway in their fashion show this past weekend, my hunch was to say, “Absolutely not.” But then, this tiny part of me thought it would be a fun way to break out of my comfort zone a little bit. While the whole thing was a bit anxiety inducing, I’m so glad I did ... it was a fun evening (and how amazing was the updo they gave me!? I died.)

And I stood on the steps off the stage, music blaring, and knew there was no turning back. I was told that if I could do it, maybe next year another woman afraid to show her cancer scars might say yes too. Maybe, just maybe, a blogger who feels like the ugly duckling due to a birth defect will volunteer and say “ME NEXT!”
