The Pinterest Mom: Day 1 of 365
Being a mom is by far the hardest job a woman can have. And yes it is a job!!! It doesn’t matter if you're a stay home mom or a full time student mom or a full time working mom, there are still duties that seem to remain in what I like to call the “mommy area”. I mean in my family, my mom did the shopping because my dad tended to buy things we didn’t need. But my dad did like to cook every now and then. And let me say my dad is a heck of a cook!! There are things that only my daddy makes right. No offense mom but you know dad makes a mean stuffed pork chops.
In my family now, I chose to do all the shopping because my hubby doesn’t have the patience for it. He doesn't like that it can take up to two hours and three stores. But my mom taught me to watch for deals and sales on everything I buy. I am also a Lister!! I do not leave my house for a grocery shopping trip with out EVERYTHING I need on the list. Without one I am more than likely going to forget something important.
I have confess that I was in a rut for many years when it came to my family's meals. The same old same old foods ended up on our table. I am not the creative type when it comes to food. You want a wonderful poem about how I am feeling, you got it. But please don’t ask me for a new way to make chicken. Or for a new breakfast idea beyond french toast or eggs and bacon. I can bake though. I can get pretty creative with a cake. But I was starting to feel like a mommy failure.
It wasn't completely my fault, cross my heart I had forces working against me every step of the way. I am the only person in our family that can be classified as a foodie. My hubby and our two kids can be rather picky when it comes to what they put in their bellies. Our son will eat most anything for dinner but breakfast is where he tends to lean toward cereal. He hates eggs!!! We have tried every way from sunny side up to scrambled but he just wont budge. Our daughter is the weirdest of them all. She wont eat, wait for it... PIZZA and PEANUT BUTTER!!! No lie, we really do have a child who doesn’t like the most favorite things of a child. My hubby doesn’t like pork chops. He'll eat them but he wont ever say “Hey how about some pork chops” when I ask what he wants for dinner that week.
So what do you do with three picky eaters and one foodie...
YOU TRY NOT TO LOSE YOUR MIND!!!
Which after eleven years of that same old same old food, I was almost on the verge. Until I stumbled upon pinterest.com At first I didn’t know what I was looking at and got overwhelmed quickly. I left the site alone. Then in August, my sister-n-law told me she had the app. And that’s when our world of food of turned upside down and I became a pinterest addict. All my Facebook friends and family know exactly what I mean when I say “HELLO, MY NAME IS HEATHER AND I AM ADDICTED TO PINTEREST”! And there's no shame in my addiction.
Pinterest has changed my life when it comes to that age old question I know I am going to hear everyday. Now I don’t mind hearing..
“What's for dinner?”
“What's for snack?”
“Are you making breakfast?”
I truly don’t have the mommy failure syndrome anymore.
I have come to enjoy my weekly routine of looking on pinterest and figuring out what I want to make. I have over twenty boards and nine of them are dedicated to food or drinks of the adult persuasion. One of the nine boards is even for homemade dog food. Even my two pits are treated like kids. I love making snacks I have found on there. I love that I can save money on making brownies just by keeping a few select and normal items stocked. I was a box girl!!! But not anymore, I will never buy box brownies again!!!
The other day I decided to do my own twisted nod to the movie Julie and Julia. You know the one where the woman spends a year blogging about food she cooks from Julia Child's cookbooks. My twist is I am doing a year of Pinterest. Everyday (starting today) til November 1st, 2013, I will blog about one of my adventures in the kitchen. I will share my family's favorites and the ones they hate. I will post pictures of how it turns out. I will tell you of any changes I make to the recipes to make them my own. I like to try to make things easier when they can be.
So to start off, I will give you the recipe for what I am calling:
“Really! They're Not Box Brownies”
1 cup of sugar
1/2 cup flour
1/3 cup of cocoa powder
1/4 tsp of salt
1/4 tsp of baking powder
1/2 cup of vegetable oil
1 tsp of vanilla
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Mix all dry ingredients together
Then add eggs, vegetable oil and vanilla.
Mix till smooth.
Bake for 20-25 minutes.
Its that easy!!! Truly never knew homemade was this easy!!! Never buying box again!!
So till tomorrow, I hope you have a good night!!! Don forget to check out and follow me on Pinterest.
