Podcast: Interview with Kelly Park from 'How to Look Good Naked'
by Megan Smith

Hate your body? Can't bear to look in the mirror? If your answers are yes, stop right where you are and listen to this podcast interview I did last week with Kelly Park.

Kelly, a married Mom of a 10 year old daughter was featured on this season's premiere episode of Lifetime's reality television show, "How To Look Good Naked," hosted by Carson Kressley. "HTLGN" takes a woman who hates her body and shows her that a large part of her problem may just be her perception of how she looks rather than how she really looks.

If you watch the "HTLGN" episode featuring Kelly on the Lifetime website---take special note of that DKNY black and white sundress we talk about during the podcast.

As someone who's had body image issues most of my life, I was inspired by Kelly's story and I think you will be too.

Great interview Megan! Kelly's description of
Kressley

when he showed up in the Cinderella coach is hysterical. She's so articulate -- I can see why they decided to feature her.

The Cinderella Coach Was A Hoot

What better way to start off a transformation than with a Cinderella coach?

And Kelly was a lot of fun.

I love Kelly Park!

I don't watch much TV so I've only seen How to Look Good Naked a couple of times - I liked what I saw. Then, when I heard Megan was going to do this interview, I watched Kelly's episodes on line and LOVED IT.

Fantastic show.

And then came the podcast, which I've now listened to FOUR times. LOVED IT, too.

That Must Be A Record!

Four times!  That must be some kind of record.

But seriously, Kelly was so natural, I could have chatted with for a couple of hours.  I expect to hear lots of great things from her.

How to Look Good Naked

Kelly is a natural! Thanks for bringing this issue front and center. "How to Look Good Naked" is a real eye-opener when it comes to self-esteem issues.

The Show's A Positive Force

Hi Ann,

The show really makes you think, doesn't it?  I defy any woman to watch it and not seriously reconsider the messages she plays over and over in her head about her body.

love the one you're with

when i turned 40, i made peace w/ the fact that i will always have large hips. so now i just relax and enjoy my food. the ideals out there are so unattainable - i love the idea that people like kim kardashian are now being considered beautiful. and those are some hips!

Curvy Girls Are Where It's At

Hi Courtenay,

Nothing against skinny girls, they have a place in the world too, but it's time for the curvy girls to stand up straight, look the world straight in the face, and smile.

All steps in the right direction!

I adore this show (and Carson, he's always so funny) and Kelly is a woman that I can aspire to be like, which is always a great reason to tune in!
Thanks for highlighting this series and this woman!

I've also started a campaign about women's beauty in magazines - I think there are a lot of similarities between the values in this show and the what I'm hoping comes of the campaign! It can be found at thepoint.com.

Denise, thanks for the

Denise, thanks for the mention!

Clare, I'm on board for the campaign.

This was a fantastic interview. I've never seen How to Look Good Naked--but I'll definitely check it out. I loved what Kelly said about her body being a "badge of honor." Knowing that at least one show focuses on self-esteem instead of diets makes me hopeful that, someday, the prevalent messages in the media about our bodies will be positive.

Body hate continues through the generations

mamaVISION

Hi Ladies: For insight into how our body hate is passed down to our daughters, I'd like you to read some posts on my blog at mamaVISION.com, particularly this recent post where the young women answered my question "What do you wish your mom knew about your disordered eating?"

67 girls posted their heart felt reponse

I've spent the past 2 1/2 years serving as a voice of reason for girls, and I can't even begin to tell you how important it is that we make peace with our bodies.

Take it easy!

It Can Be Passed From Mother To Daughter

Hi Heather,

You're so right that body image issues are often passed from one generation to the next and mothers especially need to be conscious of the examples they set, how they view their own bodies, so their daughters can grow up without that scourge of "body hate."

I've often stopped by Mama Vision and was always impressed by your commitment and common sense. Keep up the great work.
