Porch DIY Makeover
By JenniferLeible on May 23, 2014
When we bought our house, I knew the front porch needed an update. It looked dated and I wasn't feeling it.
Last year I removed the knock out rose bushes, which some people thought was crazy, however I'm not a fan of rose bushes and they were scraggly looking.
After the rose bushes were gone you could tell the railings were in rough shape. The top board was warped, the spokes were loose, some completely separated at the bottom. So, one day we decided to grab some tools and demo it! We ripped out all the railings - top and bottom and left the posts.
We talked about replacing the posts - but I was too nervous worrying about supporting the porch roof while swapping them out. So we decided to re-face them with new wood and stain.
We attached the boards with wood glue and finish nails, then applied semi-transparent stain in Padre Brown. There was a color chart where you could choose the color of stain you wanted and they mixed it for you right there. We started with just the 3 oz sample size and it turns out we only need 2 samples to complete the project!
We finished the posts with this special outdoor polyurethane. I'm not sure we need to use this, but it would help keep the posts and color in great condition for as long as possible.
All finished with our new posts!
Last year I planted Ixora...which are clearly dying, so I decided to replace them with some beautiful Salvia, only to have them wilt and wither with this past week's cold front. :( I have the worst luck with plants!!
I added a rustic ladder and burlap sack to the porch....I need your opinion. Does it looks weird? It's more of an inside piece of decor but I don't have room for it inside.
My husband pointed out that our porch looks very country now, and I'm ok with that! I'm loving the country southern feel. We love sitting on our porch in our rocking chairs and having a drink!
