The Hacker Chick has some ideas about people who are catalysts for change and how they unleash the unstoppable power of people and community. Her examples are from the world of open source and the Free Software Foundation, but they apply to catalysts of every stripe. She says,

In 1935, Bill Wilson – an alcoholic whose doctor had given him 6 months to live if he didn’t quit drinking – had a vision. His vision was that while experts were ineffective in curing alcoholism, the addicts themselves were the keys to helping one another overcome the disease.

A little disappointed the examples failed to include ideas by women. Now I get there has to be an organisational element or a movement of some sort, but I cannot help but think of women like Frances Perkins, who brought us no less than social security and unemployment compensation...nice of her to lobby FDR until he signed on, but it was her idea, her effort.

While a segment of our society rues the day she was born (if they knew what exactly Frances had done historically) most of us celebrate her achievement. As a former UI worker, I know I surely did - and for the roots of her activism, going back to the Triangle Shirtwaist Co fire.

Anyone else wish to add a name for our side?

nellewrites When I read this, I was thinking about Beth Kanter from Beth's Blog (http://beth.typepad.com/). She certainly fits the catalyst category perfectly.
