Practice Makes Perfect: Life and Business Lessons from a Child’s Video Games

My 5-year-old daughter was my inspiration.  She has been playing a hello kitty game on
the computer.  She had easily gotten
through the first three levels and kept asking me to do level 4 for her.  Well, level four ended up in my finishing
the game, and she got so excited.

As I am cooking dinner, I here her shout out in excitement
and she comes running to me cheering and jumping.  She finished level 4 by herself.
“Mommy, all I had to do was keep trying.  Remember mommy, practice makes perfect”.

As a music educator, it’s so easy for me to take my students
through the process of practice and goal setting.  I can coach them through frustration and failure and lead them to
success.  It’s what I’ve done for 15
years, and it is so natural to help them.

Practice Makes Perfect.

Somewhere along the line as adults, and entrepreneurs, we
forget the process of “Practice make perfect”.
I don’t think it’s really perfect we are after, but success.  Young children are encouraged to keep on
trying, so they naturally…keep on trying.

Grown ups usually don’t have a cheering section at the times
they need it most.  I am in the process
of launching Mighty Miracle Mist, (www.mightymiraclemist.com)
or as my preschool students like to call it “good behavior spray”.  I am marketing it on less than a
shoestring.  After my first attempt
didn’t work out so well, I thought to myself, “what did I get myself
into”?  I think for entrepreneurs, there
is a consequence in failure, usually monetary, so a small failure can lead to a
sort of paralysis.

But, watching my daughter gave me so much perspective.  She just kept on trying and was so excited
about each success.  So, that’s what I
did.  I kept on trying.

And, you know what?
I noticed each success, no matter how small.  And, each small success is building upon the next.  Each step is leading me to the one after
it.  And, I am building my cheering
section through joining different mom-preneur web groups and it is so
exciting.

Success Requires New Strategies.

Now we are playing an adorable Santa game.  Each level not only brings new challenges,
but each level requires that you think up new strategies in order to succeed in
finishing the level.  Sometimes it’s
knowing when to move, or when to wait.
Sometimes it’s knowing when to go forwards, or when to go backwards.  Sometimes it’s taking one step at a time to
see what happens or erasing everything and starting in a new direction.  The important thing is that you just keep
trying and celebrating the successes and not stopping because of the failures.

Mom-preneur Groups Offer Support and Help.

I also found that when I wasn’t taking action it was because
I really didn’t know what action to take.
Much like my students need my help as a teacher, I needed help in these
uncharted waters with Mighty Miracle Mist.
All I had to do was ask.

As I started asking one person, I was led to another person
and another website and mom entrepreneur group.  It was truly a liberating feeling to know others are in the same
place I am, and others with more experience can help me, and my experience can
help others.

I know in my heart that I will be successful, as long as I
just keep trying.
