In praise of fresh herbs, and taking risks
By Laurel Regan on July 23, 2012
Now that my herb garden is growing successfully, we have started to incorporate some of the fresh herbs into our daily meals. We snip a few chives into our omelets, tear up some basil leaves and scatter them over our pizza before baking, add fresh oregano to our pasta sauces, and toss parsley and sweet basil in with our salad greens.
I'm so glad my husband persistently nudged me into starting this long-planned experiment in growing things. While it was something that I've often wanted to do, I never actually bothered to try... and I certainly never realized just how rewarding it could be! Everything tastes so much better with the addition of fresh herbs. And though it's a long way off, I'm already looking at how I can better plan and even expand my herb garden next year so that we're sure to have fresh herbs throughout the whole summer.
It's all rather amusing to me, as I have never considered myself to have a green thumb... but perhaps it was because I never really tried? In so many ways, moving to my new city has brought out my adventuresome side, one that's more willing to try things that might involve failure. It's like I realize at some level that if I can successfully uproot myself and move clear across the country, and experience success with that, what else might I be able to achieve?!
Either that, or someone else has taken over my life!
Naah... let's say it's all me. :)
