Pre-school age kids who are short on sleep are more likely to have ADHD symptoms
By ParentInProgress on June 16, 2011
About a year ago I took my 4-year-old daughter in for her pre-kindergarten physical. When I asked the doctor how much sleep she should be getting each night he said, "I dunno. I guess about the same as adults." (Needless to say, he is no longer our doctor.)
I was concerned that my daughter wasn't getting enough sleep and that it was possibly causing issues with hyperactivity and impulsivity. As of yet, none of our doctors have suggested a link.
I did an informal survey of my Facebook friends and was a bit embarrassed to see many whose children slept a good 2 hours more than my daughter. Perhaps even more interesting: my son (3) takes a long nap (1.5 hours) every day and has no symptoms of hyperactivity or impulsiveness.
So when I ran across this article today, I was actually a bit happy because it confirmed my suspicions:
I must say, however, that it would have been nice if they had included a chart with the recommended amount of hours of sleep by age.
... Then I could send it to that doctor!!
