Every year BlogHer gets its Geek on good, with programming to scratch the itch of those of us looking to learn -- or fine-tune -- what we need to know about what's "under the hood" of our blogs. The tools we can use to do our online media-making are proliferating like mad, and with so much capacity shifting to mobile, everyone with a smartphone is an “early adopter.” That's a both a gift and a challenge: so much you can do, but also so much to catch up on! This year, we’ve split the geeky goodness into two discrete days of programming in the Social Media Geek Track.
Jes told you about Day One: The Geek Bar. All day, in three different two-hour chunks, there'll be multiple simultaneous mini-tutorials happening in the Social Media Geek room (Room 2). You sign up to be part of a small group (no more than five) learning about and trouble-shooting topics ranging from metrics to podcasting, sleuthery to accessibility. And we're excited that Google+ has just joined us...with a Google+ invitation for every BlogHer, and their community management staff on hand to help you get the most of it. Many sessions are already booked up; but you can still sign up online or try to find an empty seat on site.
Day Two, we’re diving into three vital techy blog topics, with an interactive session format. First up: Video Blogging U is in session! Carley Knobloch moderates a session with Jenny Ingram and Corinne Leigh in which they guide you through the rich and varied world of video blogging. Their experiences run the gamut, as do the styles, purposes, and production processes of their vlogs. They’ll be talking tips, tools, strategies, best practices -- with plenty of video as illustration, naturally.
Sometimes you want to empower your community beyond the comments on your posts. Building, and nurturing community on your blog has never been easier than it is today. In Implementing Community Features on your Blog, Adria Richards moderates a discussion with Holly Hamann and Sara Rosso. These three heavy hitters will leave no plug-in (or shortcut, or headache) unexamined: from WordPress to Drupal to BlogFrog and more. Want to find out how to pull your blog’s community out of the comment stream and onto center stage? Come to this session.
Finally, in Mobile Multimedia: Making Media on the Go, moderator Beth Blecherman , along with panelists Julie Yamamoto and Kris Cain, take you on a whistle-stop tour of media-making mobile gadgetry: what’s out there now, what’s on the horizon, and what you can do with them. It’s a rapidly changing, thrill-a-minute adventure in mobile media making right now, and these three women are the perfect tour guides.
Geekery has always been central to BlogHer, and we hope this diverse set of subjects and approaches to tackling those subjects will provide something for everyone.
