Pregnancy After Gastric Bypass: It Will Be Okay!
Before I begin my post, I would like if readers would please refrain from negative comments about those who do decide to get weight-loss surgery. We have heard it all before, numerous of times.
November 2010, I made the biggest decision in my life when I decided to have Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass in the pursuit to lose weight. Everyone that I have met since then tends to have their opinions on a 19-year-old getting such a risky surgery, but I was specially recommended by my doctor due to the fact that I was close to getting high blood pressure that would eventually lead to diabetes. I was morbidly obese, and had tried all my life to lose weight the “normal” way.
But this post is not about my surgery, it is about what happened to me after the surgery. See, I wasn’t really informed that rapid amounts of weight loss tend to make heavy-set women more fertile. I had lost 70 pounds very quickly, and you betcha, I found out that I was pregnant very soon after my four-month post-op check up.
Aside from being freaked out in general that I had gotten pregnant unplanned, I was scared out of my wits because I had had serious stomach surgery four months prior and was still in the process of losing weight (uncontrollably, might I add).
But to my surprise, when I told my surgeon's office, they were all calm about the matter. My OB/GYN said she had seen a gastric bypass patient at one month post-op and that she had a healthy baby of eight pounds. When she said that I felt much better. Automatically I was put on double the prenatal vitamins, and had to stop going to the gym to avoid the extra loss of calories, but aside from that I had a very good pregnancy.
This doesn’t mean that the recommended wait time to get pregnant after gastric bypass should be ignored (which is 18 months post-op), but it shows you that if it accidentally happens to you, DON’T FREAK OUT.
Weight loss changed my life for two reasons: I am now half the size I was only a year and a half ago, and I am blessed with the cutest son I could have ever asked for. Liam is now four-months-old, our family is stronger than ever, and I am in the best health and shape I have could have ever dreamed of.
