President Bush Farewell Tour: Don't Let the Screen Door Hit You on the Way Out

It's been a very long farewell tour for outgoing President George W. Bush. I've gotten the feeling that he's been phoning it in for a while, but then I decided that's not such a bad thing, given his dismal record in the last eight years.

He's had his final news conference, where it became clear that maybe he really was out of touch for his two terms in the White House. And I have to agree with Campbell Brown on this one -- we both thought his comments about his presidency during that news conference were out of touch with reality and revisionist big time (to borrow a phrase from Dick Cheney).

Thursday night, George Bush got around to his final (really, really) talk to the nation in his official capacity. It wasn't much, barely 15 minutes to take another pass at instilling his version of his presidency on our collective memories. I hate to break it to him, but my even in my 'old age,' my memory is better than that.

As Arianna Huffington told Rachel Maddow following the speech, George Bush is still "delusional" about his accomplishments, or lack thereof, after all these years:

The speech was spin at its most dangerous. It's easy to feel a pang of pity for a guy who was on top so long and is now heading out the door. But the more sympathy he evokes, the more susceptible we are to the lies he is telling. Before we know it, his revisionism becomes accepted as the truth.

So if there was any value in the speech it was this: it should remind us of the importance of refusing to allow this delusional revisionism to stand.

I was genuinely shocked by what he said in those few minutes, but I'm not sure why I continue to be. What would make me think that all of a sudden he would realize that maybe he ought to apologize to the nation? Maybe 'fess up that he made some mistakes? I suppose when you're a president whose world view is so narrow and simplistic, it's easy to think you've done a great job and nearly impossible to acknowledge that your actions were anything other than pure.

He told America that he made the hard decisions and always had our best interests at heart. He showed us the face of man who seems untroubled by the fact that on his watch we have become entangled in two foreign wars, have fallen into an economic pit so deep that many think it will be years, not months, before we find our way out, have seen our Constitutional protections diluted and have watched as his administration cavalierly trampled on women's rights, including equal pay and reproductive rights.

And those are only a handful of the things he's done to the nation that the Barack Obama administration is going to have to undo. If you believe that's how our nation should be, then I suppose a laurel and hearty handshake are in order.

Not surprisingly, Bush still claims we are safer than we were eight years ago, thanks to the efforts of his administration to keep terror at bay? Really? Mr. PunditMom reminded me of the story of a man standing on the corner, waving his arms and hands about his head. When asked what he was doing, he replied, "I'm keeping the elephants away." The questioner shockingly replied, "But there are no elephants." The hand-waving man responded, "See. It's working."

I hear the Bush's personal belongings are pretty much packed and ready to go at precisely 12:01 p.m. on January 20. President Bush, don't let the screen door hit you on the way out. And please don't spend any more time patting yourself on the back for the job you've done. I had hoped you would just be a place-holder president and not do much damage when you were (sort of) elected in 2000.

Maybe I'll wake up and it will all have been a bad dream. And, Mr. President, watch out for those elephants on the way out.

I have been working for Impeachment since March 2003.  Not surprising with 1 son recalled and another a senior in High School, planning on a Naval career.  You see, I was watching the news during that time.  I knew the UN inspections were successful.  I knew the Marine's (Major Scott Ritter) Fall of 2002 college recruitment tour was entitled, why see for yourself:

Understanding the Roots of Terrorism: Iraq as a Case Study.
No WMD’s In Iraq: by Marine Major Scott Ritter
November 13, 2002   http://sass.caltech.edu/ritter/SASS-Keynote.m...

How could the marines know something, and the President not?  Why?  And the Marines also have offices in the Pentagon, with Congress.  Why did they not communicate?  Why did I have this information and believe the same as Senator Clinton, we were just posing to intimidate them.  I remember the Marines in Afghanistan, two weeks before the invasion, Press Release that claimed they had Bin Laden's hiding place down to ONE SQUARE MILE in those mountains.

I am of the generation of Desert Storm vets.  They saw what Iraq people needed most was WATER.  They planned 7 water wells and formed IraqWaterProject.org with active military personnel.  The invasion took out 3 of the 5 the Iraq Water Project had up and running, they were marked as "missile launch sites".  Check out the website yourself.  It is not "expedient" to allow our great country to continue to allow gross negligence like this!

But, I respect and obey the laws of my country.  If you honestly believe the process of U.S. justice "does more harm than good", then please work with me to change the Pledge of Allegiance to delete "with liberty and justice for all", because obviously, from your point of view; we would also need to add "when expedient for public officials" - but that rather makes the Constitution, Bill of Rights N/A, does it  not?

Are you really a Patriot, or do you believe praying and Blessing everyone will solve all problems?

Mistakes = Confusing Suniis and Shias. Mispronouncing a world leader's name. Putting Brownie in charge of FEMA.

Not mistakes = Sanctioning torture in violation of international treaties. Falsifying evidence to lead your country into a war that furthers your own agenda. Making reckless decisions that cost thousands of lives. Violating your vow to uphold the constitution.

I think our democracy and our country is more important than any one man. If investigating him for war crimes - or simply discussing his failings - is what is required so that this horrible page in US history doesn't repeat itself, I think that's perfectly reasonable.

This is not a man who did is best. And if he did, well shame on those who believed that his "best" was all that America deserved.

No one should cast stones. I'm positive that President Obama will only be human...lol  He has good intentions as I'm sure all new Presidents have had, but then at some point reality hits...... Everyone knows that all Presidents in the past have made promises and did not keep them for one reason or another.....All we can do as Americans is Pray for God to lead. Men are weak and powerless, God is almighty and strong.

An interesting question might be, where were the Bush retrospectives about how he failed with Katrina, the economy, hunger, health care ... the list goes on.

That's a show that should have been put together to counter-balance the Bush self-congratulatory tour.

From one super fabulous house wife to another.........LOL

You're totally RIGHT!  Who would go to all the trouble to get the Presidency then mess it all up on purpose  just for the media to have a field day making fun of them. Especially knowing it is going down in the history books!  Come on America, they are just humans! I feel they try their best.  Just imagine having things thrown at you, situations that are surreal and at times horrific, I'm glad that I'm not the President. I imagine long after their term has ended they struggle in their minds and are haunted by some of the tough decisions they had to make. God bless them.....

true change comes from everyone doing their part, not just the guy in charge of everything - while I think each president tries his best (who WANTS to goof up and make a mess of things?) they are still just men.

   Dear worrywart,

Not sure if you were referring to my comment. If you are; my view point is let us try as human beings to stop complaining and start to do something positive. Evereyone is human even public servants. If we continue to dwell on past mistakes or poor judgements made by public servants, we will hinder progress for future generations. Let us try to remember that even President Obama is human and will not be able to accomplish everything perfectly or alone. We all have to do our part and complaining or having great anger does more harm than good. All we can do is our personal best and, Of course, pray for our new President and country. Thank you for your time.....

You honestly believe we should drop investigations into abuse of power and the breaking of, not just the laws of our land, but international treaties also?

Do you have so little care for future generations? or honestly believe public officials are above U.S. law and the Constitution, which, if you noticed today, is what they swear to uphold and protect?   Or, is it our laws in general, you don't think anybody should follow U.S. law?  Sure could save a lot of taxpayer money.

I must know your motive in your acceptance of considering any U.S. citizen - especially a public servant, "above the laws" of our country, please respond.  I can not understand.

"There is in the nature of government an impatience of control that disposes those invested with power to look with an evil eye upon all external attempts to restrain or direct its operations. This has its origin in the love of power. Representatives of the people are not superior to the people themselves." - Alexander Hamilton - Federalist Paper No.15, 1787.

We are all human and lets try to remember that. The main thing is to pray for the country and our new President. Whether we agree or disagree on things.

I thought Obama put to rest old wounds and asked us all to stand together to make a better country. If everyone continues putting down one another HOW WILL THIS EVER HAPPEN????? WE ARE ALL AMERICANS start pulling together and praying together and acting like one!

just saying any president can only do so much, I don't expect anything earth shaking from Obama... tho I'm sure he will do as fine a job as any man can do. - I do think he will clearly do better than George... but I think George did all he was capable of.

Let us remember these tales of "He is Human" in four years.

Sure I understand the rights need to protect the virtue of the past eight years.  Are we any safer since 9-11? Sure we haven't been attacked domestically but due to the actions of war we still have a large target on our backs.  We are not 100% safe.

Bush is human and he did make mistakes but I have the feeling that if Obama doesn't live up to his high expectations those who protect Bush will be the ones to cast the first stone on Obama.

I agree with the poster that I'm thoroughly sick of Bush retrospectives.  Pity us poor New Orleanians.  First he seems to ignore our drowning city.  Then he flies over looking presidential.  Then he gives a good enough speech with our beloved cathedral as backdrop but neglects to follow through on promises made in said speech.  Last week he defended his record, claiming he did a good job.  Today's local newspaper (nola.com) has a truly frightening article.  Evidently he's feeling remorse and wants to come help out.  Please, please, please just go to Dallas and leave us alone.  We have Brad Pitt and John Edwards and Jimmy Carter and others who've actually been helping for 3 years.  Just melt into the sunset please and never come here again.  I beg you!

His fans and followers will always believe he was the second coming of Reagan.

His record on reproductive rights speaks for itself.

The worst part of the end of the Bush Administration is the constant retrospectives of the last dismal 8 years that have been playing over the last couple of weeks whether on the BBC, FOX, or Comedy Central.

Hopefully when he finally exits stage right, he'll be gone for good. But I suspect in later years you will hear him musing about how he was doing God's work. Once again, refusing to take responsibilty, but now with religious dispensation.
