The Princess and The Frog

The latest Disney princess, Tiana, has made her debut into the sisterhood of

Snow White, Ariel, Jasmine and the rest of the classic Disney princesses.

Tiana comes to life with classic hand-drawn Disney animation we have not seen in a while. There is a jazz-infused musical score which you would expect from a princess from New Orleans.

The Princess and the Frog transports audiences to glorious, glamorous New Orleans as Tiana, the first African American Disney princess meets her frog prince and gives him the fateful kiss that leads them both on a hilarious adventure through the mystical, magical bayous of Louisiana.

I loved the return to hand drawn animation, the tour of the French Quarters and introducing children worldwide to the fabulous beignets  and gumbo of  Louisana. Being a southerner myself, I always feel Hollywood over does southern accents. The accents were a little exaggerated but it was fun to hear a southern accent from an animated character. I felt it was time for an African American heroine and appreciated that working hard to get ahead was emphasized repeatedly throughout the storyline. Tiana came from a family of hardworking and loving folks unlike many of the past princesses with evil stepmothers…

Tiana’s dream is to have her own restaurant is a contrast to her friend, Charlotte, who fit the traditional Disney princess role. Is blonde, seeking a prince, wishes on a star…But, Charlotte does appear to have a kind heart and truly cares for her friend, Tiana, and does not seem to see Tiana in a lower social class.

Many of my friend’s young daughters have a tremendous interest in cooking because they watch the Food Network and Rachael Ray. I believe Tiana’s passion for cooking will be very relatable to this foodie generation.

I personally am very passionate about empowering young girls to realize they are special and talented with or without a prince and I believe this film featured a strong female lead that chooses love over money and hard work over partying. I was not thrilled about the voodoo influence in the film. I thought that was a little out there for my personal beliefs. But, it was Mardi Gras. Overall I really enjoyed The Princess and The Frog and know it will thrill young princesses in kingdoms far and wide.
