If you're expecting a baby, I'm sure you've had dewy eyed dreams about that day you get to leave the hospital and head home to start life with your precious bundle of joy. But hold up, mom and dad. Have you researched your infant's car seat thoroughly? Do you know how to install it -- now -- before baby arrives? Do you know what all the buttons and gadgets and whozitwhatzits do? No? Get the manual out now!
Now that I've panicked you, take a quick breather and check out this helpful post by Chelsea at Thirty-One 10. She's gone over all of the things you need to consider ahead of time so you don't end up with a screaming newborn while you're trying to install the car seat in 104 degree heat.
She shares a lot of important and good advice:
Start shopping for car seats long before your due date! They will not let you leave the hospital until you have a car seat. I suggest getting on the email list’s for Babies ‘R’ Us and Amazon Mom. They often run specials on car seats and you can sometimes get a really good deal. Amazon is a great place to look to see what other mom’s said about certain makes/models. Just simply click on “reviews.” There are also often local programs that can assist you in finding a car seat for free or a discounted price. Search the web, or check with your local police/fire station.
Be cautious when accepting or purchasing a used car seat. You never want to use a seat that is more than 6 years old or one that has been in a crash. If you don’t know the seat’s history, or see any cracks on the seat, play it safe and do not use it.
And not to scare the pants off of you, but I need to share this little anecdotal story. When my newest nephew was born last month, my brother (dad) and his wife were in a car accident ON THE WAY HOME FROM THE HOSPITAL. I kid you not. Apparently my sister-in-law went into Super Mama Bear mode and used some colorful words to tell the other driver to pull over. NOW.
So, yes. You need a good infant car seat. Now. Finish reading Chelsea's post and tell us about your newborn car seat woes and/or tips.
