Professional Makeup: Worth It For Your Wedding?

I don't want to toot my own horn, but I'm fairly decent at doing my makeup. I've found a handful of products, over the years, that work best for my skin type and my face shape, and I can get the look I want fairly easily when I use them. Of course, that could be because the look I want is pretty much "barefaced and natural with just a hint of English rose" rather than, say, "super hot Goth with a killer smoky eye," but still.

But I'm getting married at the beginning of September, and I'm going back and forth over whether or not I should hire a makeup artist. On the one hand, I know that putting your makeup on for work is very different to putting your makeup on for The Most Important Day Of Your Life, One In Which Many Pictures Of You Will Be Taken, Often While You Are Crying Or Sweating Or Both. But on the other hand, surely I'd just step up my normal routine a little on the big day, go for the waterproof version of things, and be sure to remember lots of blotting paper and extra lipgloss?

Finding a professional makeup artist seems so daunting---especially since I'm getting married hundreds of miles from where I live now. And what if I don't like what they do? I know you can have a trial, sure, but it's another hundred bucks or so, on top of the hundred bucks the makeup artists in San Diego seem to charge for the day-of application. And since I'm definitely getting someone professional to do my hair---there's not a chance that I'd try and wing that one myself---my beauty budget for the big day seems to be steadily creeping up.

Here's where I stand now: I'm going to use the next three months to seek out a good foundation (which is something I never wear and therefore know nothing about), practice getting the look I want with the products I own, and pop into Sephora sometime on a slow day to see if I can get one of the women working there to show me a few things that might look good on me. Because at this stage, that seems a whole lot less stressful than trying to find (and hire and pay) a reputable makeup artist in San Diego.

What do you think? Did you do your own wedding makeup? Did you regret it? Is there a must-have product you'd recommend if I go it alone?

I almost never wear make up but I didn't want to pay to have it done because the other times I've had someone do my make up I hated the way it looked.  I did go to the Clinique counter and let them do it for me, got a lot of suggestions, and bought a lot of the products she used since I had no make up.  I was pleased with how I looked and how my pictures looked.

I second the suggestion that the trick is to get makeup that photographs well. I hired a professional for my wedding, and I thought he went a bit too dramatic for my taste, but the pictures came out awesome -- the stereotypical "me only better." Turns out makeup for photographs is darker and more matte than you think. (Forget "glow-y"and "blushing".)

Maybe you can find a local artist who will do a trial run and Sean can take pictures? Maybe you can give her copies of the pictures for her portfolio in exchange for a discount? (And you can take notes on what colors and brands she uses.)

My sister recently got married and I was her MOH.  Mom, who is a wedding consultant, hired a pro to do the makeup for the entire bridal party.  She used an airbrush, which I hadn't experienced before.

It was incredible.  Normally my makeup is down somewhere near my chest after several hours of dancing and sweating and crying and so on, but this stuff became one with my skin.  I looked every bit as good at the end of the night as I had in the beginning, in spite of copious tears.  It didn't break me out, didn't feel itchy, was completely weightless...  I wish I could have her come to my house every morning.

You can see pics if you go to http://www.newweddingessentials.com/current/ and select the Winter 2009 issue (which is currently the current issue - with the palm tree on the front).  Open the PDF and scroll down to page 119.  Mom owns the ballroom and chapel where my sister got hitched, and has worked with the magazine people for 10+ years, so when Sis got married they did an article.  (My kids are the flower girls, and I'm the one giving the toast with the hammer).

If you can afford it, I highly recommend airbrushed makeup.

Well I am pretty sure you could do it yourself especially if you practic before BUT what you're looking for is makeup product that wil PHOTOGRAPH well, on top of being waterproof.

You'll need a good primer under your foundation (like smashbox photo finish) and eye primer under your eye makeup (like too faced shadow insurance), a foundation like MUFE HD or something made for photographing anyway and something to diffuse light on strategic areas of your face (again, smashbox has this).

There are vids on you tube that will show you how to do a flawless face that photographs well, I particularly like this channel http://www.youtube.com/user/BeautyARTStudio, the girl is a pro MUA and she shows techniques with a lot of details (unfortunately her account has been hacked and she has not re-uploaded all of her vids yet but check it out, you'll surely find one where she shows how to do this kind of face).

Hope this helps!
