Project Runway Recap: The Final Four, and this time we mean it!!
by Elisa Camahort

Short version: Still lame, still not fair, but at least they finally actually went from four to three...Sheesh!

OK, when we last left our Project Runway friends they were being wimpy and wussing out. Unable to cut from four to three they kept all four, and asked all four to work on a collection, and told all four to come back and compete to get to compete at Bryant Park. Did you follow that? (PS-of course we all know that they all showed at Bryant Park...it's the competing that was at stake.) They each got to work on a collection...and it had to feature a wedding dress. Cure dramatic music. (I'm not sure why that was so stunning to everyone, but it was.)

Wednesday night's episode started with Tim's visit to each designer.

He visited Korto in Little Rock, AR, where she showed him a collection inspired by nature and culture, and trying to be ethnic, "but not too ethnic." She also had an unfortunately adorned vajayjay dress, which Tim delicately pointed out to her. Hey, Tim, vajajays are natural!!

He traveled on to visit Leanne in Portland, OR, where she remained as low-key (read: boring) as she ever was. Is this what Portland does to people? She likes water. She likes waves. You are getting verrrry sleeeepy.

Next was Jerell in L.A. Jerell has gone hog wild with texture and bling. Tim is concerned. Listen to the Tim-man, Jerell, listen!!!

Finally (and we all knew they'd save her for last) was Kenley. She of the tug-boat upbringing. She has painted her own grandma prints instead of buying them...and begrudgingly I will admit they look better than the prints she has been using. She also has invested in feathers and rope. She's kinky, our Kenley. Tim is concerned about the rope around the neck factor...Kenley can't imagine why. Again, kinky. Clearly.

After Tim's fashion Odyssey, we return to NYC where a half-hearted apology for being a bitch from Kenley seemed enough to make everyone like her again.

I'd play a little harder to get myself!

So the surprised challenge was to create in one day a bridesmaid dress to go with the wedding dress. They all freak out some more. And even Tim seems a bit verklempt over this final four.

On to the runway...

(And you can view the dresses yourself here.)

1. Jerell

The wedding dress: The skirt from the empire waist down is fairly fabulous...champagne silk with off-white tulle underneath. The top however is this strapless concoction with big floppy panels and sequins and big bejewelled action going on. Paired with a plant growing out of her head with incongruous pink flowers, the effect from empire waist up was over the top and not in a good way. And the train in the back started at the bra strap line, thus further obscuring the model's body.

The bridesmaid dress: I liked this. The silvery green fabric was an interesting and unusual color choice, and it seemed very apropos for a wedding in Autumn.

Bottom line: OK, yes, it was a bit over the top, and aprticularly the top of the wedding dress was not successful, but it was also interesting and seemed pretty well-made to me.

2. Kenley

The wedding dress: I'm sure you know it kills me to say it, but: Her wedding dress was indeed adorable. I call it the Swan Lake Wedding Dress. The snug strapless bodice was completely overlaid with feathers, and the feathers continue down to create an overskirt, and then longer, fuller tulle is the underskirt. And there's a cute little bird hat too. Now MK called her out for basically copying Alexander McQueen, and you can compare the two dresses yourself here.

The bridesmaid dress: Although I agree this was a cute dress, I also didn't think it was terribly original. It's a peacock blue bubble dress with a sheer inset as the top half of the sleeveless bodice. It's a cute silhouette, but I didn't find it stunning.

Bottom line: These two dresses were definitely the best work Kenley had done on the show. It was obvious my dream of her elimination would be dashed.

3. Korto

The wedding dress: This was a hot mess. The pleats, the seams, the pouffing, the jewelry, the muddy color. Yikes and double-yikes. Especially the choice to have a seam run around at the coochie line and have the skirt pouffing start from that point down. SOOOOO unflattering. Seriously, check the picture at the link above. Korto manages to make a rail-thin model look like Mae West. Never a good sign.

The bridesmaid dress: This was a cute little toffee-colored halter dress with a deep plunging neckline and horizontal pleats on the bodice. I don't agree that the dress had no relation to the wedding dress, but I will say the cheesy beaded waist band had no relation to the dress it was on.

Bottom line: I was fairly convinced that Korto, having been in the bottom the previous week and having not had quite the impact of Jerell or Leanne, was in deep trouble.

4. Leanne

The wedding dress: The dress featured a very clean, very simple strapless bodice and then a two-tiered skirt featuring those wave-effect dolds/pleats that Leanne rhapsodized about when Tim visited her. Unlike Korto's double-tier of pouffing it did not seem like too much.

The bridesmaid dress: The bridesmaid dress was a short dress that featured the folded effect on the bodice and then a simple clean skirt. All in a lovely sea foam blue color.

Bottom line: This was beautiful, clean work. I thought it was clearly the strongest work.

The judges (there was no guest judge in case you were wondering) liked Leanne's the most, clearly. And they loved Kenley's too, although as noted above, MK called her on evoking Alexander McQueen. Which she of course blurted out wasn't true and that "no one has ever done this silhouette". Um, really? Truly? You think no one has ever done that silhouette? Grow up!

So, it came down to Korto or Jerell going home. Jerell's was garish, and Korto's was overworked. I must admit that I was shocked they chose Jerell to go home. It seemed to me that he had much more clearly established himself, having won 3 of the last 4 challenges. It was also shocking because he won the previous one and should have been guaranteed a slot, whereas Korto was in the bottom two the previous challenge as well as this one.

I still don't think it's fair, particularly because I thought his overworked garish dress was much less of a hot mess than Korto's overworked garish dress.

IMHO.

But what did you think?

Sorry I missed that one

It's a shame Jerell went before Kenley.  Leanne, dull and boring though she may be, does have some sense of style.

Even though Korto landed in the bottom 2 during the last 2 challenges, I believe she has a certain something that the other women do not have.  I'll be rooting for her.

And if she doesn't take the top prize, I won't be too upset.  Heidi Klum has the fashion IQ of a grandma wearing Go Go boots and a blonde beehive.  JMHO.

 Always in trouble...

We're not all boring!

(Though, there is a place in Oregon called Boring.) I honestly think that's just Leanne's personality. Way back at the beginning, she called herself a fashion assassin. That made me think of a ninja. She made it to the final three and her work probably speaks louder than she does.

It is surprising that Jerrell didn't make it to the final three. That said, with the knowledge that so many of this season's contestants showed at Bryant Park last month, I'm hopeful he'll find someone to take a chance on his work and help him in refining his pieces.

GO Leanne!

I was surprised that Leanne made it past the first round, but since that time, I have been quietly rooting for her. Although she has mousy very girl-in-the-corner features, her work is beautiful. I LOVED her wedding dress rendition. I was avant garde, and made me think of Carrie's (SJP) dresses in Sex and the City The Movie. So, GO LEANNE (And KORTO).

Tell Kenley to sit down!!!

I predict the winner....

I've not been a real fan of Leanne's, but I see Tim and Heidi and the judges just fawning over the "architectural" aspect of her work over and over again, and I now predict she will win.

That wedding dress was pretty amazing. Extremely sophisticated.

That said, I always liked Jerell's over-the-top work, and I will miss him!

Kenley needs some maturation time, in more ways than one.
