And some of them are not crying "Hallelujah!"
Last night the Top 13 had to design an outfit for Tiki Barber, former NFL running back and current Today Show correspondent. I feel I must point out that it's certainly not "Project Runway first" to have the designers design men's clothes. In Season 2 they had to give each other makeovers and since some of the designers were men, some of the designs were for men. It is the first time they've all had to do meanswear and ahd male models though. And it put most of them in quite a tizzy.
We got to meet Tiki Barber, and then we got to hear way too much about his body...big neck, skinny waist, big butt...TMI, OK?
After 30 minutes of sketching and 30 minutes in Mood to spend $150, they were off and running. Or off and stumbling I should say. I think there wasn't a single designer who felt comfortable or in their element the entire episode. Not being a seamstress or tailor of any kind I'm a little unclear why making a man's outfit would be so radically different from a woman's. Haven't they ever made a suit for a woman? The pieces are the same, but I guess the proportions and measurements would be a teensy bit different, eh?
And boy, did their inexperience and discomfort show...it was a runway nightmare!
1. Jillian showed a gray 3-piece suit with some floral patterned shirt and an open collar jacket. This looked pretty well put together, but it wasn't exactly fashion forward. Or even interesting.
2. Carmen. Oh my, Carmen. It was so so dreadful. She sent a little newsboy down the runway, complete with jaunty cap and woolen scarf to keep him warm against the pre-dawn chill. The pants didn't fit at all. The jacket wasn't so much Members Only as old-man-sitting-on-park-bench, Terrible.
3. Christian featured a khaki pant with a strange too-short jacket and a taupe sweater with an assymetrical zipper at the neck. Very 80's once again...he better watch out about that!
4. Kit featured another too-short jacket with only one button, along with sleeves that seemed way too short. The whole thing struck me as very feminine a la Nick's outfit for Daniel in Season 2.
5. Rami had another tan old-man-jacket, paired with a blue pant a jacket, and a shirt with a weird collar. This outfit did not make a huge impression on me good or bad.
6. Sweet P. Oh my, Sweet P. Another horrible effort. A stripe pant that didn't fit so great, but it was the gray short that was the disaster...just so poorly made. It looked like a clown outfit, especially when paired with her oversize tie.
7. Steven's outfit was a little Eurotrash Casual for my taste, with a high-waisted brown pant and a green sweater with a scarf. But inoffensive enough.
8. Victorya sent something down the runway that looked well put together...a dark pant and top with a light jacket. Again boring, but the triumph was in not sending absolute crap down the runway this week!
9. Kevin had an unfinished vest with only a top tack, not even a button. There was a pink shirt, with a tie and a pocket square and some pants. This probably wouldn't have been one of my top picks because I thought the vest looked really sloppy. This was more Eurotrash Annie Hall.
10. Chris. Continuing the Eurotrash trend, this was a Eurotrash Funeral Director outfit. All black. Lots of black. And a zipper.
11. Jack played it safe and went for two pieces only, a brown striped slack and a pink/navy striped shirt with some use of angled stripes. It was cool and sophisticated looking, although a bit simple with only the two pieces.
12. Ricky on the other hand went for the gusto and for making a full-on suit. Unfortunately it was a bit over-sized a la David Byrne. I thought it could have been worse, but it should have been a lot better.
13. Finally, my namesake, wackElisa. They didn't spend much time on her this week, except that she doesn't like to see or touch naked men outside her boyfriend. She showed pants with a tan sweater and brown vest. It was a little whimsical, but at least it wasn't deadly dull.
It wasn't hard to predict that Sweep P and Carmen would be in the Bottom 2 and Ricky joined them there. I really had no idea who would get the top scores, although jack seemed a pretty safe bet. He was joined by Kit and Kevin (the biggest surprise to me.)
After the inquisition I guessed that it would be Jack for the win and Carmen to be out. (I mean she sent the guy out there without a shirt...Tiki's fans might like it, but come on!)
And so it came to pass.
This episode was so fraught with tension and poor design that it wasn't quite as fun as most episodes. It's nice when at least half the designers can kick ass with a challenge. Having none of them kick ass was just depressing!
But what did you think?

Is designing for men difficult?
In men's wear, there so few items worn that I think it's difficult to come up with new ideas. After all, how many ways are their to design pants and shirts? I can understand their dilemma. In fact, this wasn't the first episode with problems in men's wear.
I enjoyed watching this episode, but I'm looking forward to next week when, hopefully, they get back to women's wear. Although, I'm still waiting for them to design some infant or preschool wear......................LOL

I was really struck by
how badly almost everyone's clothing fit. I guess if you're making a dress and it's too long, you just cut it off--but the arms on Sweet Pi's shirt were truly awful.
I thought that she was a little endearing in her 'this is the worst thing I've ever done' self-criticism.
